Who is Harry Kane? Step into the world of the Tottenham legend and club record goalscorer
Tottenham Hotspur have had some incredible strikers over the years, but none have been more prolific than Harry Kane. He may have left the club now, but it’s still worth knowing everything you possibly can about this iconic player.
Harry Kane joined the club as a boy, developed through the youth system, and went on to become a Spurs legend before departing in the summer of 2023.
His phenomenal goalscoring record at Spurs will likely never be broken, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down in Germany, either. Here’s the lowdown on the inimitable Harry Kane, a player Tottenham fans will never forget.
Harry Kane had a slow start to his career
He may be one of the best strikers in the world now, but Harry Kane took some time to get going in the early days of his career, failing to impress during loan spells at the likes of Millwall, Norwich, and Leicester City.
Kane actually began his career with Rovers FC, before joining Arsenal’s academy. Things didn’t work out there, and he spent a short spell with Watford’s youth system before signing up with Spurs in 2004.
His first loan spell, with Leyton Orient, was fairly successful, with Kane bagging five goals in 18 games. He spent a few months with Millwall in 2012, too, scoring nine goals in 29 games.
Spells with Leicester and Norwich were less impressive. The Canaries gave him five matches before terminating the loan deal, and Kane only scored two goals in 15 games with Leicester in 2013.
Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer – Harry Kane
Thankfully, things worked out in the end for Kane, and he eventually went on to score 280 goals for Tottenham to become the club’s all-time top goalscorer.
2014/15 was Kane’s big breakthrough year, with Mauricio Pochettino making him his main striker. Kane repaid that faith with a return of 21 Premier League goals, and never looked back.
From then on, Kane established himself as one of the top marksmen in the English game and indeed Europe. He was the key source of goals for Spurs for almost a decade, and delivered some huge moments, including a slew of goals in North London derbies, big performances against Manchester City, and forging a formidable partnership with Heung-min Son.
Kane surpassed Jimmy Greaves as Tottenham’s top goalscorer in February 2023, and it is very unlikely anyone will ever break that record now.
Kane left Spurs to win trophies at Bayern Munich
Harry Kane made the huge decision to leave Spurs in the summer of 2023, joining Bayern Munich. He cited his desire to win trophies as the main factor behind the move.
The idea of Kane leaving the club had first really been planted in 2021, when he was heavily linked with a switch to Manchester City. At the time, Kane reportedly tried to push through a deal, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy did not play ball.
Prior to joining Bayern, Kane was linked fairly strongly with Manchester United, too, but opted to leave England and try his hand in Germany.
That pursuit of trophies came to nothing in Kane’s first season with the Bundesliga giants, though. Bayern were usurped as champions by Bayer Leverkusen, fell in the semi-finals of the Champions League, and struggled in their domestic cups.
Despite this, Kane still flourished, registering 44 goals and 12 assists in 45 games for his new club in the 2023/24 campaign.
Kane is England’s greatest-ever goalscorer
Just as with Tottenham, Kane is a record holder for his country, surpassing Wayne Rooney as England’s top goalscorer in March 2023.
At the time of writing, Kane has scored 68 goals in 100 appearances for the Three Lions. He made his debut in March 2015, grabbing a goal in a Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania.
Since then, Kane has scored an incredible amount of goals in other qualifiers and friendlies, and has also performed well at major tournaments.
He was named England captain by Gareth Southgate in 2018 ahead of the World Cup in Russia, and has led the team to two Euros finals, and a World Cup semi-final.
What awards has Harry Kane won?
Harry Kane may not have won a trophy yet, but he does have a number of personal honours to his name, including three Premier League Golden Boot awards.
He was the league’s top scorer in 2015/16 (25 goals), 2016/17 (29 goals), and 2020/21 (23 goals).
Kane also won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup with six goals, and was top scorer at Euro 2024 with three goals.
Since his move to Germany, Kane has also won the Golden Shoe for his impressive return of 36 goals in 32 games in the Bundesliga last season. He looks well on course to repeat that again this season.
Kane was also handed the Gerd Muller trophy in October 2024, for being the highest goalscorer in all of Europe across the 2023/24 campaign.
Harry Kane market value, wages, and net worth
Harry Kane’s current market value is just over £83m, and he earns just under £400,000 per week with Bayern Munich.
Spurs sold Kane to Bayern Munich for an initial £86m, but add-ons and performance related bonuses are likely to take that fee closer to £100m.
His market value has been retained thanks to his prolific start to life in Germany, as the striker shows no signs of losing his quality just yet.
As per data from Capology, Kane is Bayern’s highest earner, with an annual salary of €25m (£20.78m) per year.
According to a report from The Mirror in July 2024, Kane has a net worth of £76m.
