Netanyahu says he is open to Gaza ceasefire for hostage release
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that he is willing to accept a ceasefire in Gaza to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. However, he emphasized that the war in Gaza, which Hamas seeks to end, will not cease in exchange for the hostages’ freedom.
In his first interview following a ceasefire in Lebanon, Netanyahu said, “I am ready for a ceasefire in the south [Gaza] that leads to the release of hostages. I am prepared for a ceasefire whenever necessary.”
Netanyahu, without providing details, mentioned that Israel is working hard to reach an agreement for the release of the hostages and has been actively engaged in efforts to achieve this goal.
The Israeli Prime Minister also stressed that the situation in Lebanon differs from Gaza and reiterated that his goal is to destroy Hamas. He once again stated that he will not allow Hamas to regain control over Gaza.
On Wednesday, Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a 60-day ceasefire, raising hopes that it could be extended or lead to a permanent ceasefire.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned about the catastrophic conditions in northern Gaza, citing severe shortages of medicine, food, and shelter. WHO described the situation as “disastrous” and called on Israel to facilitate more humanitarian aid and operations in Gaza.
The WHO also reported that nearly 90% of the population in Gaza has become homeless due to the ongoing Israeli attacks, forcing many to live in tents.
The organization warned that the cold weather, rain, and flooding would worsen food insecurity and malnutrition, leaving people vulnerable to respiratory and other diseases. A recent UN-backed assessment has also indicated that famine is imminent in northern Gaza.
