Axtell football gearing up for fourth-straight state championship appearance
AXTELL (KSNT) - Seeing Axtell football in the 8-man Division II state championship has become a common occurrence over the past few seasons, and this year is no different.
The Eagles are set to make their fourth-straight championship game in a row, and they've won each of the last three times they've been. In fact, Axtell hasn't lost a game since securing the 2020 state title.
The Eagles are on the cusp of completing four consecutive perfect seasons, currently riding a 51-game winning streak.
"We take every week, each opponent serious week-by-week," head coach Eric Detweiler said. "If you seem to be successful every week, obviously you get there. Our goal is never to be 51-0 of course, but if you just do your job and be dedicated every week, you'll get there."
A portion of highway K110, which leads directly into Axtell, is lined with signs in support of the Eagles as they make their state run. One sign reads "Way go to go 51-0."
"It's everything," senior Brandon Schmelzle said of the community's support. "If we want anything or need anything, they're here. They come to every Friday night ball game and it's nice to have that.
"It's nice to know that everyone here has our backs," senior Eli Broxterman said. "And we're out here doing it for them."
After taking down Frankfort 52-20 in the 8-man DII semifinals, the Eagles will face undefeated Victoria in the championship. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. in Greensburg.
