Spurs do not hold power in American Premier League fixtures – Expert says
Former Everton and Aston Villa chief Keith Wyness makes an interesting comment about Tottenham’s stake in the proposed decision to take a part of the Premier League season to the United States.
Could we soon see the PL go to America?
A number of leagues across different sports have decided to take a few of their regular season games abroad in an effort to grow the sport in new markets.
Tottenham themselves have been beneficiaries of the NFL doing exactly that, with the club’s stadium hosting two matches per season.
There are talks of the Premier League making the jump to the United States at some point in the future, with Liverpool chairman Tom Werner recently insisting that the is determined to see at least one game played in New York City (Financial Times).
Keith Wyness on PL’s plans and Tottenham’s input
TBR Football even reported last week that privately, several big Premier League sides have expressed interest in playing outside the UK.
One would assume that Tottenham might be pushing to play across the pond, having invested in growing their brand in the United States via the NFL deal.
However, Wyness believes that Daniel Levy and co will not have any special sway in the matter and rejected the idea that the NFL deal has made a big difference to Tottenham’s brand recognition in the States.
He told Football Insider: “I don’t think Spurs would have any special rights just because of the NFL situation. It would be a Premier League decision if games were taken abroad.
“I don’t think it would just be one fixture going abroad, either. There would be a lot of thought going into the fixtures and teams chosen. I don’t think there is any great allegiance to Spurs in the US because the NFL games have been held there.
Wyness supports the idea of taking the PL abroad
Wyness admitted that during his time at the helm of Villa and Everton, he championed the idea of playing a 39th league game in a foreign country.
He believes that the way to go is to have one blockbuster weekend of fixtures in different markets to showcase the Premier League globally.
Wyness said about the proposed idea: “I was part of the group who tried to bring a 39th game abroad before, I supported that back in 2007. I believed in the idea of having five or six international fixtures on one weekend in different time zones.
“There could be one weekend to showcase the Premier League globally – it would be a blockbuster for them. I still think it has to be thought about.”
