Lawyers Fighting Hunger gives away Thanksgiving meals
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - Thousands of Oklahomans were up before sunrise, bundled up and braving the cold Friday morning temperatures for the Lawyers Fighting Hunger 15th Annual Thanksgiving food distribution.
“I've been coming here since I was, like, 16. We usually get here, like around four, 4:30,” said Amanda Williams.
William Deason got in line at 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
"To be first in line,” said Deason. “Without [the giveaway] there would not be a Thanksgiving for me. At all and I appreciate this a lot."
Noble McIntyre started the tradition 15 years ago.
"I see this year after year, it's really pretty shocking. I mean the fact that people come and stay outside in the cold all night for a turkey. You don't do that unless you have to have that, unless you need that,” said McIntyre. “I think the fact that we're able to step up and help is great. It makes me feel good."
He told KFOR about 2,000 free turkeys were given to families at both the Oklahoma City and Tulsa locations and about 150 were distributed at the Mustang giveaway location.
Sherita Nipper waited in line for hours to get a turkey for her family of eight.
“This is for my grandchildren who are going through a very, very hard time,” said Nipper. “It's a beautiful thing. People come together to help each other."
