Indian diplomat blames Canadian Prime Minister for tensions between two countries
India’s ambassador to Canada, who was expelled from Ottawa over allegations of involvement in the killing of a Sikh leader, emphasized his innocence in a recent interview.
Sanjay Kumar Verma stated that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is responsible for the tensions between India and Canada.
Last week, India and Canada expelled each other’s diplomats in a retaliatory move following Ottawa’s accusations that Delhi had targeted Indian dissidents on Canadian soil.
Prime Minister Trudeau specifically linked six individuals to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist, last year in British Columbia.
In an interview with CTV, Verma asserted that Trudeau relied on information rather than solid evidence.
When asked if he had any connection to Nijjar’s murder, Verma responded, “No evidence or proof has been presented. This is politically motivated.”
As tensions between India and Canada continue to rise, the diplomatic fallout has raised concerns about further deterioration in bilateral relations. Both nations have yet to provide clear paths for de-escalation, leaving diplomatic channels strained.
Relations between the two countries soured after the Canadian government announced in September last year that credible evidence pointed to Indian agents being involved in Nijjar’s assassination.
