Mid-Autumn Block Party draws thousands in Brooklyn
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) – Such a steady rain washed out so many block parties and outdoor festivals this Saturday.
Luckily for thousands, the first mid-autumn block party from Chinatown Social was indoors, and what a party it was.
Close to 2000 people packed this two-tiered event space in downtown Brooklyn to support Asian American small businesses.
This block party is so different because these 40 vendors selling food, clothing, jewelry, toys, and art can display their merchandise for free.
There are no fees. It’s a way for Chinatown Social clothing brands to give back to their community.
“The point of the event is to highlight an Asian American entrepreneurs and artists,” Kai Shum, mid autumn block party co-founder, told PIX11 News. “And to give them a platform to showcase all that they can do,” he added.
Emma Suen, 15, a junior at Herricks High School on Long Island, makes crochet animals by hand. They cost $10-$50.
PIX11 News asked how she had time for her high school studies. Emma replied that it was all about “time management.”
There were medicinal gummies from Reprise to give you focus and energy and help you deal with stress. And look at these beautiful chopstick-inspired hair ornaments from Nunchi, which cost $ 29.
“I think it’s a really great event to highlight AAPI small businesses,” Jane Dua, Nunchi owner,” told PIX11 News.
Her customers agreed.
“I think these with butterflies on them are very special,” Meeja Kinsey, a Nunchi customer, told PIX11 News. “And I wanted to support local businesses,” she added.
This block party at 345 Adams Street lasts until 10 p.m., followed by an after-party with deejays until 2 a.m.
