One club could stop Spurs from signing Johnny Cardoso
Tottenham might be unable to take advantage of their clause to join Johnny Cardoso next summer if one club have their way.
Tottenham’s option for Cardoso
Tottenham have an option to sign Cardoso from Real Betis for around £25m, with the option only thought to be valid for a two-week period in next summer’s transfer window (The Telegraph).
This clause was agreed between the two clubs as part of the agreement to take Giovani Lo Celso from North London back to Betis in the summer.
If Ange Postecoglou’s men decide against activating the clause, they will automatically get a sell-on clause for the USA international (Football.London).
Serie A side want to wreck Tottenham’s plans
Both Calciomercato and Estadio Deportivo are now reporting that AC Milan could prevent Spurs from getting their man as the Italian club are plotting a move for Cardoso.
It is explained that Paul Fonseca wants to bolster his midfield in January and has identified the 23-year-old and Red Bull Salzburg’s Lucas Gourna-Douath as his top targets.
If the Rossoneri were to wrap up a deal for the Betis man in January, the option that Spurs have on the player and their potential sell-on clause would both be void as they only become active from next summer.
Johnny Cardoso’s struggles
While Cardoso caught the eye after establishing himself in Betis’ starting eleven last season, the midfielder has struggled for game time so far this campaign.
The American appears to have fallen down Manuel Pellegrini’s pecking order, having been limited to just 46 minutes from two league games this season (Transfermarkt).
Unless Cardoso manages to turn around his fortunes, it is unlike that Spurs would consider activating the aforementioned clause as his market value could potentially even fall to lower than £25m.
