Nintendo warns fans of ‘suspicious’ scam and begs players to not open any links
AS with all gaming accounts, if you have a Nintendo console, you are probably used to receiving emails from time to time.
These usually alert Nintendo fans to special promotions or sales, but there are a variety of different reasons they will occasionally email players.
However, Nintendo has now sent a warning out to players that they should be suspicious of any emails they receive from the company.
Nintendo says it has “confirmed cases” of suspicious emails sent from accounts spoofing the official Nintendo email account.
The emails will apparently come from the official Nintendo account, but the company confirms that it is a malicious third party.
Players should be cautious of any emails that come from no-reply@accounts.nintendo.com, as while this is the official Nintendo address, they have not been sent from the company.
In particular, users should be cautious of emails containing links, and have been warned to not open any links from Nintendo emails for the foreseeable future.
A statement from the company reads: “We have confirmed cases where suspicious emails are being sent pretending to be from our company’s email address (no-reply@accounts.nintendo.com).
“They provide information about companies and services that are unrelated to our company.
“These are emails sent by third parties with spoofed sender email addresses and are not genuine emails sent by our company.
“The links in these spoofed emails may be phishing sites, so if you receive one, please delete the email without opening any links in it.”
Nintendo is not the only company to fall victim to these spoofing and phishing scams, and the advice given should be followed for all suspicious emails.
In particular, people in the comments have claimed that they received similar emails from online marketplace Mercari, which, if true, means that the scam is not limited to Nintendo.
People should remain vigilant of their emails even if they come from known companies or other trusted senders.
If you are not expecting an email with a link then it is best practice not to click on it.
Those who think action needs to be taken, can verify if the email is genuine by going to the official website through their browser, rather than clicking a link in an email.
