A LAUNDRY pro has shared her top tip to get your clothes dry for free all year round.
While everyone knows not to leave their washing out in the rain, cleaning and laundry expert Sarah Dempsey says putting it outside on dry, windy days can be a game changer.
In fact, while a staggering 61% of Brits admit they don’t put their washing outside in the winter, Sarah said that it can actually be MORE effective than doing so in the summer.
“While heat is a very helpful tool for drying clothes, it’s not the only factor that goes into drying clothes,” the pro from MyJobQuote explained.
“High levels of humidity in the air can result in longer drying time so, in some cases, you may find that your clothes dry much more quickly on a cold winter’s day than they would on a humid summer day.
“When hanging your clothes outside, you’ll find that wind can even further speed up the drying process.”
And, as an added bonus, getting clothes dry in the wind means you’re less likely to have to iron them.
“Wind can also help with getting the creases out of your clothes,” she noted.
There are ways to avoid keeping a clothes line in the garden too.
“You can place a clothes airer outside to help your clothes dry quicker and to prevent too much moisture from building up in your home,” she added.
Plus, air-drying your clothes not only provides a cost-effective alternative to the tumble dryer, it’ll also extend the life of your clothes – particularly in the case of knit fabrics.
“It may sound simple, but when washing more delicate items of clothing, avoid bundling them into the washing machine with everything else,” Kimberly Royle, Buying & Sourcing Director at Joules, added.
“Taking extra care of clothing is essential to ensure it maintains its longevity, quality, and appearance.
“Take a quick look at the care label to prevent any unnecessary wear-and-tear as well as fading and fabric damage.”
Another commonly made mistake this time of year is trying to get clothes dry by hanging them on the radiator.
“Drying your clothes on radiators can increase the moisture in the air, and this can lead to damp and mould forming,” Sarah explained.
“This increased moisture can cause health risks.”
It’s also likely to increase your energy bills, as you’ll use more power keeping the heating on to dry the clothes.
“If you do choose to hang your clothes on the radiators, it’s best to use radiator drying racks with the help of a dehumidifier to keep the moisture levels in the air down,” she added.

Sarah also said you should hang your clothes up immediately, rather than leaving them to fester.
“You should avoid leaving your clothes in the laundry basket or washing machine,” she warned.
“This can cause them to smell and may result in mould growth.
“Instead, you should hang your clothes on a clothes airer as soon as the cycle is finished.”
