Celtic legend escapes ‘terrifying’ car crash after ‘sleeping driver’ ploughs into him
CELTIC legend Frank McAvennie has opened up on his lucky escape during a “terrifying” car crash he was recently involved in.
The former Hoops striker, 64, was struck by another driver who he claims had fallen asleep at the wheel.
He was rushed to hospital after the smash which left his VW Touareg a write-off.
The ex-Scotland star said he only made it out alive thanks to his quick “reflexes” as he tried to steer away from the other vehicle.
Macca told how he was left in pain after suffering from whiplash during the crash in the Scottish Borders on August 4.
Speaking on his podcast, Let Me Be Frank, he said: “I had a bad car crash a couple of weeks ago.
“It was terrifying. It was quarter to eight in the morning and the guy actually fell asleep.
“He came driving across and luckily with my reflexes I swerved.
“He’s hit the front, right down the car. It could’ve taken me out, but it didn’t.
“It’s a good car, strong car. I just think the big man’s got other plans for me – you are not getting out that easy.”
McAvennie was heading to play golf at West Linton with friend and fellow ex-Celtic forward John Hartson.
Fortunately, the retired striker is expected to make a full recovery.
He spoke of his ordeal on the latest episode of the podcast with co-host Simon Houston and guest, ex-Scotland goalkeeper Alan Rough.
McAvennie added: “I had to go to the hospital. But best get on with it.
“I’ve not played golf for a week bit, I must be bad.”
McAvennie started his professional career with St Mirren, before moving down south to play for West Ham.
He switched to Celtic in 1987, scoring 27 goals for the Parkhead side over two seasons.
McAvennie returned to the Hammers in 1989, before stints at Aston Villa, Cliftonville in Northern Ireland, and South China in Hong Kong.
He had a second spell with the Hoops between 1992 and 1994, hitting the back of the net 10 times.
McAvennie made five appearances for Scotland, scoring one goal, and hung up his boots with St Mirren in 1995.
