Kieran Trippier mentions former Spurs teammate in the same breath as Messi
Forget Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Kieran Trippier says Mousa Dembele is the greatest player of all time, and insists the midfielder was possessed a ‘frightening’ level of talent.
Dembele joined Tottenham from Fulham back in 2012, and would become a lynchpin in the midfield for years to come. The Belgian eventually left North London in January 2019, joining Chinese side Guangzhou City.
Over the years, Dembele made 249 appearances for the Lilywhites, and while he may have only scored 10 goals and added 12 assists during that time (Transfermarkt), this is a player whose game was not judged on attacking returns.
Especially under the reign of Mauricio Pochettino, Dembele excelled in the middle of the park, and used his composure, strength, and skill to dominate the midfield area. His former boss even compared him to the likes of Diego Maradona and Ronaldinho (Marca).
Sadly, Dembele was sold before Spurs’ big Champions League final, a decision which Danny Rose suggests may have cost them the crown (Tottenham Hotspur podcast).
Is Mousa Dembele the GOAT?
Now, another of Dembele’s former teammates has heaped praise on the midfielder, with Kieran Trippier suggesting he is the best of the best. In a word association game for Sky Sports, Trippier was asked who he would describe as the GOAT (greatest of all time), and he opted for Dembele.
He said: “I’m going to put down Dembele. Of course, you could say Messi or Ronaldo, but this guy, when I played with him at Tottenham was the GOAT. Honestly, in training, in games, what he could do with a football was frightening.
“Every time people say who’s the best player you’ve played with, he’s one of them for sure.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I’ve long claimed Mousa Dembele is one of the very best players to have graced the Premier League, and I’m very glad he is getting the credit he deserves now. He was simply magical to watch, and I really miss seeing him in a Spurs shirt.
