Capital Bike seeks Treasurer to join Board of Directors
Capital Bike (Bike Victoria Society) is seeking a Treasurer to join its Board of Directors. This exciting volunteer position is an opportunity for a community leader with management and business experience who holds their CPA (or equivalent) and is passionate about the environment and active transportation.
Capital Bike acquired charitable status in December 2022. In this role, you will be playing a pivotal role in establishing a new charity. You will be working from the ground up, building the financial systems and processes that help the organization run as an effective and efficient charity.
Background:
Capital Bike is a dynamic and growing charitable not-for-profit organization. Formed from the merger of the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition and the Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society, Capital Bike has a track record of tremendous success – over 25 years – in the region. With financial support from community, business, and government, Capital Bike organizes and delivers a wide variety of cycling experiences for all ages and abilities. Our largest programs are Go By Bike Weeks and Everyone Rides Grades 4&5, which engage over 10,000 adults and 4,100 kids each year, respectively.
The Role:
The Treasurer is a voting member of the Board of Directors of Capital Bike and serves on the Board’s Executive Committee. The Treasurer works closely with the Executive Director and Board to promote good fiscal planning, decision-making, and governance oversight. A working knowledge of Simply Accounting software is helpful, but not necessary. The expected time commitment is approximately 15 hours per month.
As Treasurer, you will:
- Develop high-level financial policies
- Prepare the annual budget and financial reports
- Work closely with the Executive Director and Bookkeeper to ensure up-to-date and accurate financial books
- Prepare monthly financial statements for Board review
- Submit Corporate T2 tax return annually
- Ensure government financial reporting, payroll, tax filings and remittances are submitted
- Serve as a co-signer of cheques and donation receipts
Help Build our Future:
If you have a financial background, are self-motivated, passionate about the future of cycling in Greater Victoria, and want to help Capital Bike achieve its goals of making cycling safe and accessible for everyone, this position is for you.
