‘It makes no sense’ – Former Spurs man rips into Levy’s Ryan Mason decision
Garth Crooks has questioned the logic behind Tottenham’s decision to hand the reins to someone as inexperienced as Ryan Mason until the end of the season.
Mason has been put in charge on an interim basis after the Cristian Stellini experiment backfired quite spectacularly, and there has been a notable improvement in performances since the 31-year-old took charge.
While Tottenham only have four points to show from their three matches against Manchester United, Liverpool and Crystal Palace, the Lilywhites have looked like a much more potent attacking unit, fashioning plenty of chances in all those games.
Mason showed his tactical versatility in the 1-0 win over Palace, with Spurs defending with a back four but moving to a familiar 3-4-3 system in possession.
However, Crooks suggested that the likes of Levy would not deem it acceptable to put someone as inexperienced as Mason in charge of any of their other business endeavours.
The former Spurs striker wrote in his column for BBC Sport: “I have always been fascinated by executives at football clubs who make these decisions.
“In their everyday life, they often run very successful companies with chief executives who have formidable track records and would never run their businesses how they run their football club.
“Spurs currently have Ryan Mason, a rookie caretaker manager in charge of team affairs, which is like giving an accountant who has just passed his accountancy exams the role of running of a FTSE 100 company for a few weeks to see how he gets on.
“Which credible business would do that? It makes no sense but it does seem to be the acceptable way in which professional football is run these days.”

While one can see where Crooks is coming from, there is no doubt that Mason was the best choice to steer the ship until the end of the season.
There is no chance that the 31-year-old would ever be in contention to get the job permanently this summer as he would need to prove his chops at a lower level first.
