I transformed my patio on a budget using just a couple of items – but there’s a dead easy trick you need to start
A MUM has shared how she totally transformed her rundown patio in just a few easy steps.
Shauna, a keen DIY enthusiast, was fed up of looking at her drab garden patio and wanted a change.

However, instead of forking out a fortune and calling in the professionals, she decided to save money and set to work on upgrading it herself thanks to faux paint tiling.
And Shauna, who runs a TikTok account dedicated to all things home interiors and DIY, decided to film the whole process so her social media followers could do it too.
Shauna uploaded the step-by-step tutorial in several parts on her profile @homediydiary – and there’s some surprisingly easy tricks to get you started.
But Shauna said that the key to the makeover was to prepare the concrete base for the paint “because it’s getting a major transformation on a budget.”
That meant ensuring that the patio was totally clean and didn’t have any debris on it. And that’s why she turned to a pressure washer at the start.
After using the handy machine on the concrete slabs and allowing it to dry, it was time for the fun part – painting.
Next to footage of her mixing up her chosen shade, she said: “Next, I’m starting to paint the concrete base.
“I’m looking to achieve a tiled patio effect on a budget so I’m going to be using paint, not real tiles.”
She then lifted the lid on the products that would be helping her achieve her vision, as she said the base was all down to Tikkurila’s Finngard Silicone Protect, as well as a mix in primer.

The mum added: “Great news, I get to skip the priming by using this Owatrol mix in bonding primer – this is going to help the paint stick to the concrete surface without the need of having to prime it separately.”
She continued to say that she had opted to use an anti-slip grit which she would sprinkle all over the painted patio.
She added: “I’m not sure how necessary this is but it’s just an extra step to prevent the patio from being slippery.”
The TikToker then launched into the technique, revealing it’s as simple as applying the paint with a microfiber roller with an extended handle for ease.
She explained: “I stirred up [my base coat] and then I split it because I’ll only be the bonding primer on the first coat of paint.
“I ended up using one litre of the bonding primer to about four litres of paint – but that’s just for the first coat, the second coat of paint will be just paint and no bonding primer.”
Once the first coat had been applied, Shauna allowed it to dry naturally, before hoovering up any debris and going in for the second coat.
Once the patio had been fully covered in her chosen shade, it was time for Shauna to show off her artistic side and create the faux tiles.
She explained that she used old material – including part of a bed frame and an old tile in the size she wanted – as templates.
Shauna then painted the border using the bed frame to ensure it was a straight line. Then she laid down the tiles and painted around them to create the look she was after.
She said: “I used a spare tile that I found in the garage to use as my template to paint on the border, I went back in with my square brush and did some touch-ups, before sealing the concrete.”
Shauna then finished her makeover by applying a thin layer of varnish.
The result? A perfect looking patio with faux tile design that everyone described as “fantastic”, “amazing” and “real expensive looking”.
