Think UK strikes are bad? Here’s what is happening in Europe

Headlines over the past year have been dominated by the chaos caused as millions of workers across various industries have gone on strike, usually over pay rows amid the cost of living crisis.

From train and tube workers to teachers and civil servants, almost every aspect of day-to-day life in the UK has been impacted by the walkouts and protests.

But we’re far from the only country in Europe that has resorted to industrial action.

Here’s a run down of some of the industrial action that has recently been affecting our European neighbours.

France

In France, strikes over pension changes have turned violent, with French President Emmanuel Macron comparing protestors to those involved in the Capitol Hill riots of 2021.

The strikes began on January 19, 2023, and were organised by people opposed to the governments plans to raise the retirement age from 62 – one of the lowest ages for an industrialised country – to 64.

The French government argues that since people are now living longer, they must work longer, so that there are enough workers paying into the system to fund the retirees.

Outrage over the pension reforms has led to workers in the transport sector, teachers, bin collectors and more going on strike.

The streets of Paris are now filled with piles and piles of rubbish, and many flights and train services have been cancelled across the period.

Things escalated on March 16, when Macron invoked article 49:3 of the French constitution which allowed him to push through the reforms without a parliamentary vote.

This led to two confidence votes being tabled against Macron, the first by Charles de Courson, France’s longest-serving MP – which the President survived- and the second by far right politician Marine Le Pen, which was rejected.

The pension changes will now become law, and because of this the protests became violent, with protesters setting alight the piles of rubbish, and clashing with riot police.

The city hall in Bordeaux was even set on fire by protestors, although one French couple seemed unfazed by the violence, as they were filmed sipping wine whilst the street behind them burned.

Is enough being done to support people through the cost of living crisis? Have your say now

Hundreds of people have so far been arrested and on Monday, a man went into a coma after clashes with police.

Germany

On Monday, March 27, there was a ‘mega strike’ in Germany, as staff at airports, ports, railways, buses and subways walked out for 24 hours, bringing the public transport system to a near standstill.

Workers were striking to demand higher wages, due to the rising cost of living.

Frank Werneke, the chief of union Verdi, told German newspaper Bild that a pay rise is ‘a matter of survival for many thousands of employees.’

He said: ‘The people are not only underpaid, they are hopelessly overworked’.

On February 17, airline workers at seven major German airports took part in industrial action, causing over 2,000 flights to be cancelled, also in a dispute over pay.

In recent weeks, there have also been walkout across other sectors in Germany, such as childcare and education.

Spain

Anyone planning on heading to Spain over the Easter holidays may have their plans affected by Spanish airport strikes.

Swissport ground-handlers began striking on February 27, and will continue striking on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays until April 13.

If you are planning to travel to Spain during this period, it is best to check with your airline to see whether your flight may be disrupted.

Which Spanish airports are affected?

The strike is over pay and working conditions and is affecting the following airports:

  • Alicante
  • Almeria
  • Barcelona
  • Burgos
  • Gran Canaria
  • Huesca
  • Lanzarote
  • Madrid
  • Malaga
  • Murcia
  • Reus
  • Salamanca
  • Tenerife Sur
  • Valencia
  • Valladolid
  • Zaragoza

The Netherlands

The Netherlands is another European country that has been affected by public transport strikes in recent months, with six weeks of strike action beginning on February 28.

A total of 15 strike days will take place between then and April 7 as workers fight for higher wages.

Marijn van der Gaag from the FNV union said: ‘Employers stubbornly refuse to come to a good collective agreement with a living wage and less work pressure.’

‘They are the only ones who can prevent the strikes, which are very annoying for the passengers.’

Greece

In Greece, workers across a number of different sectors including train drivers, doctors, teachers, bus drivers and ferry crew went on strike last week after a train crash caused the deaths of 57 people.

Train drivers said they told the government about long-running problems with the electronic systems that are supposed to warn of danger ahead, which they say led to a head on collision between a freight train and a passenger train on February 28.

Kostas Genidounias, head of the Greek train drivers union said: ‘We drivers have filed complaints about these things, we have gone on strike about it […] but unfortunately no one listened to us’.

‘They told us we were lying, we were slanderous, we had other interests, in the end it showed that the workers were right and unfortunately we experienced this tragedy.’

On March 16, protesters threw petrol bombs at a police cordon near parliament, with riot police responding with tear gas and stun grenades during a brief flare-up of violence that disrupted otherwise peaceful demonstrations.
