Melissa has 17 years’ experience in providing high end, specialised luxury treatments, in Mayfair, London and in Suffolk and is a leading specialist in natural alternatives to Botox and cosmetic surgery.
Melissa explained that over time, it’s natural for the skin on our face to become thinner and drier and lose its fullness.
But thankfully, Melissa has shared now shared with Fabulous her seven tips to slow down the ageing process naturally, without needing to go under the knife or raid Boots and Superdrug for expensive anti-ageing creams.
Grab some ice for a red carpet look
If you’re going out and need an instant glow, Melissa has just the hack for you.
She explained: “Dunk your face in a bowl of icy water, for around 15 seconds.
“It will reduce inflammation and puffiness, tighten the skin, by closing the pores and speed up soft tissue healing.
“This procedure works well, as a pre-make-up primer.
“If you want to step this technique up a notch, try organic, green tea ice cubes. Green tea has antivirus and antibacterial properties.”
Cut down on salt and sugar
You may not know it, but your salt and sugar intake could be making you look a lot older than you actually are.
According to Melissa: “Salt is necessary for our bodies to function properly, however excessive salt intake dehydrates your skin and makes your face look puffy whilst sugar affects your blood sugar levels which breaks down collagen and elastin.
“For a healthier alternative to table salt, opt for Himalayan Pink Salt, as it has 84 essential trace elements, required by the body.
“You can also use the Himalayan Pink Salt in your bath, as it draws out toxins from the skin.”
She also advised: “Try ditching sugar for natural alternatives, like date sugar, maple syrup and raw organic honey.”
Quit smoking and cut down on alcohol
You might be sad to hear it, but if you want your skin to avoid getting wrinkly, it’s a good idea to put the cigarettes and booze down.
Melissa revealed: “If you smoke, then stop, because it’s not only harmful to you and those around you but smoking speeds up the ageing process. It causes wrinkles and a dull complexion. Our cells require oxygen to function optimally.
“If you drink alcohol then try to drink less. Alcohol is ageing because it dehydrates the skin.
“Dehydrated skin is more likely to appear sallow and crepey.”
Protect your skin from the sun every day, including cloudy days
Wearing SPF every day is an important habit to form if you want to prevent premature ageing on your face.
Melissa advised: “When it’s hot and sunny in the summer, it’s easy to remember to wear your SPF.
“However, for the purpose of age prevention, SPF is also needed in the winter because there are UV rays around us, all the time, even on a cloudy day.
“Therefore, starting to use your sunscreen daily and continuing to do this in the cooler months, will ensure that you stay looking youthful for as long as possible.”
Melissa also explained that during the cooler months, our skin can suffer from dryness.
Therefore, she advised using an oil that provides SPF.
Repetitive facial expressions caused by hay fever symptoms
Premature ageing can be caused by repetitive facial expressions and as we enter hay fever season, seasonal allergy sufferers will find it hard to avoid sneezing, rubbing their eyes, nose and the sensitive skin on their face.
Unfortunately, over time, these actions can damage the skin barrier and age the skin.
Adopting a holistic approach, Melissa suggests eating raw organic honey, produced by bees in your region.
Melissa explained: “The honey has enzymes that help to metabolize your specific regional pollen. By eating a tablespoon of honey each day, will help you to become inoculated.”
Also, Melissa recommends drinking peppermint tea, as it’s a great detoxifier, decongestant and anti-inflammatory.
Finally, she encourages people to hydrate with plenty of spring or alkaline water throughout the day.
Squinting equals fine lines
Squinting can cause fine lines around your eyes.
So according to Melissa, if you’re doing this on sunny days, then you should opt instead to wear sunglasses.
She also noted that if you’re squinting to try to read or watch TV, then you may need prescription glasses so should visit an optician.
Beauty sleep is essential
It’s often told to us time and time again, but Melissa highlighted the importance of getting a good night’s sleep.
She concluded: “Sleep is the time when our body repairs and regenerates itself.
“During sleep our skin’s blood flow increases, making new collagen which prevents sagging.
“If you have problems sleeping, avoid caffeine before bedtime. Remove any distractions such as electronic devices and work from your bedroom.
“Make sure that your room is a cool, quiet, dark and relaxing place, for you to get your eight hours of beauty sleep.”
