Alasdair Gold reveals what Conte told Spurs board after fiery comments
Alasdair Gold has revealed on Football.London that Antonio Conte clarified to the Tottenham board that his post-match tirade on Saturday was aimed at the players.
Conte certainly did not mince his words in his post-match press conference after Tottenham threw away a two-goal lead late in the game to Southampton and emerged with just a point from St Mary’s.
The Tottenham head coach accused the players of playing for themselves rather than the team and insisted that the squad lacked the fight and desire to dig deep to get three points (Football.London).
He also accessed the media of finding excuses for the players and added that he had never experienced a situation like this in his career.
Perhaps, the most controversial part of Conte’s rant was his suggestion that the club are used to failure for the last two decades despite having many different managers in charge.
Some pundits, like Jamie Carragher, opined that the 53-year-old should not have criticised his employers publicly, given the amount he is getting paid.
His point about Spurs not winning for a long time is right, but you don’t speak about your own club like that.
Especially when you’re getting paid fortunes by them!
The improvement in Arsenal this season after finishing above them last season kills a lot of his arguments. https://t.co/k0SnLGHkxu

However, Gold has now explained that Conte actually made the above statement regarding two decades of failure in the context of defending the club.
The journalist revealed that the Spurs head coach met with the hierarchy and clarified that his comments were aimed solely at the players.
Spurs Web Opinion
It was clear that Conte’s rant was aimed at the players but I felt that he should have taken more responsibility for the team’s struggles.
A significant portion of the squad is made up of players that we signed during the Italian’s time at the club and all the others are players that he could have got rid of if he wanted to.
So, if he feels that there is an attitude problem within the squad, that only reflects poorly on his own decisions.
