The Gold creator speaks out on future of BBC show after hit first season
THE GOLD’s series creator Neil Forsyth has given hope the show may continue for a season two following its success.
The series, which follows those behind the infamous 1983 Brinks-Mat robbery, is available in full now on BBC iPlayer as a boxset, though continues to air weekly on BBC One.
With many fans already demanding a second season after blasting through the first six episodes, Forsyth has teased fans with what could lie ahead for The Gold.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, Forsyth said: There is certainly still story to tell, so we will have to see what happens.
“For now, I’m just delighted with the reception that this series has received.”
He added: “There was a lot of story and some fantastic characters that we just didn’t have room for in the show, which is one of the reasons that myself and the show’s researcher Thomas Turner have published a book called The Gold to give people the wider story.”
With £26million in gold bullion stolen from Johnson Matthey Bankers Ltd, just outside Heathrow Airport, in 1983, the series follows what transpired afterwards, including a significant laundering scam and a long-held investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
The bank also collapsed as a result of the biggest heist in the world’s history at the time, with four out of the six men involved in the heist never getting caught.
Hugh Bonneville leads the cast as DCS Brian Boyce, who’s in charge of finding the masterminds.
The series follows the intricate business dealings that transpired in the aftermath, with some of the tale being even further elaborated from the already wild truth.
The Gold therefore has the scope to continue on beyond this initial six-episode run, and if renewed is likely to have another batch of episodes around the same length.
BBC is yet to formally announce the future of the series, with the show continuing on BBC One for another three weeks.
The Gold is available in full now on BBC iPlayer and continues weekly on Sundays at 9pm on BBC One.
