Possible Cap Casualties The Chicago Bears Could Snag
Unrestricted free agents are often the biggest focus every March. That won’t change. However, history shows each free agent period has its own wrinkles. These are usually brought on by other players getting cut. Other teams have salary cap concerns to deal with, and they’re forced to make a sacrifice somewhere on their roster. The Chicago Bears and other teams can often take advantage of such an opportunity. A perfect example is the landing of Josh Sitton in 2016.
Perhaps such a break could be coming their way again this year. Thanks to several teams being over the salary cap, the odds of several noteworthy veterans getting released are high. Keenan Allen is already a hot topic in Chargers country. Here are some other players Bears fans should keep an eye on.
The Chicago Bears could have some opportunities coming soon.
Robert Woods (WR)
Tennessee made the trade for Woods last off-season, and he was pretty dependable with over 500 yards and two touchdowns. He managed this coming off of a season-ending injury in 2021 and playing in a totally new offense. However, the Titans are stuck in a salary cap crunch at $23 million in the red. Releasing Woods would cut that in half at $12 million. His veteran leadership and route-running skills would be a great addition to a Bears wide receiver room in desperate need of both.
Shaquille Griffin (CB)
A Pro Bowler in 2019, Griffin had his best season in 2020 before signing a big deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. His past two seasons were tough: he missed 14 games with injuries and struggled through constant locker room turmoil and coaching changes. Still, Griffin can be a solid, dependable cornerback when healthy. The Bears need somebody to pair with Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon. He has that mix of athleticism and length Matt Eberflus typically covets from his players.
Dalvin Cook (RB)
The Minnesota Vikings have some tough decisions to make at $23 million over the cap. Cook has been a terrific player for them since he was drafted. He remains one of the most electric runners in football. Still, teams often feel they can sacrifice running backs before any other position. If Chicago wants more explosiveness in the backfield, Cook is an easy choice. He is a great all-around weapon and has lots of experience playing in a wide-zone offense similar to what they run.
Kenny Moore (CB)
Indianapolis isn’t as pressed for cap space as other teams, but they are changing coaching staffs yet again. That may lead them to unload some expensive contracts. Moore was a Pro Bowler in 2021 under Eberflus. However, he took a step back under Gus Bradley this past season and also missed five games with injuries. The Colts may look to ease their cap burden by claiming the $8 million via cut. He would be an obvious choice for the Chicago Bears to sign, giving them a terrific nickel corner and allowing Gordon to move outside.
Tyler Higbee (TE)
Cole Kmet made great strides this past season, leading the team in receiving yards and touchdown catches. Still, good teams often have two capable players at a position. Nobody at tight end stands out for the Bears besides Kmet. Higbee would change that. While not a star by any means, the Los Angeles Rams veteran has been a reliable weapon in the passing game since he was drafted. He and Kmet could form a strong combination with plenty of versatility.
