Energy question - billed after contract period (2 replies)
I was hoping the great minds of SHA may be able to assist. Basically, can the energy company charge for me for a previous contract which I thought had been settled?
I have been given a whopping bill which relates to the last 12 months. January to July, I gave regular meter readings and was billed for this period. I paid all bills and my contract ended in July.
I asked for the balance of my account to be paid, which it was. I had no reason to think there were any problems. I have only now realised that there was a mistake in april's bill - their fault, which benefitted me.
I was under the assumption that my contract had ended and everything was up to date, I asked for final bills and the balance to be paid.
So I start a new contract in July 22 and I have now been hit with a whopping bill. Are they entitled to receive payment as it relates to a previous contract which I understood to be finalised and settled? I had given them meter readings throughout the period and because of their mistakes they billed me from january to april erroneously - not in accordance with my meter readings which would have given me a bigger bill at the time (only just realised now after trying to work out what has gone on).
Although it would be nice to benefit from money not paid because of their mistakes I genuinely thought that I was just building up a decent credit as I was watching my energy usage, I had no idea that there was a problem and there was no issue with may june and julys bills. Its annoying that I had built up a huge credit which has been turned into a huge debit even though I was paying my direct debit the whole time. I still haven't gotten to the bottom of how I owe so much but I just want to find out if they have any entitlement to ask for this money.
It is all in a 12 month period so no back billing principle arises.
