Google Pixel 4 gets surprise software update but it is not everyone
The Google Pixel 4 and the Pixel 4 XL were among the company’s most ambitious phones that were meant to take on Samsung and Apple like never before. With some advanced features such as Motion Sense, the Pixel 4 should ideally have been a hit, but customers did not show much interest. Later, Google announced the last guaranteed software update for the Pixel 4 would arrive in October 2022, which means the Pixel 4 is currently at the End of Life (EOL) stage.
But it seems it is not over yet for the Pixel 4. According to Android enthusiast Mishaal Rahman, a new software update is now available for the Pixel 4. However, there is a catch. It is not available for everyone. Rahman, in his tweet, said that the new update, which brings the December 2022 security patch, is meant for developers only and was sent to the Android Privacy Sandbox. This build is the Android Developer Preview 7, he mentioned along with sharing screenshots.
According to Google, “The Privacy Sandbox on Android aims to develop new technologies that improve user privacy and enable effective, personalised advertising experiences for mobile apps.” This could mean that Google wants developers to tinker with the software for the Pixel 4 and that it is not for stable users. Those who do not wish to become a developer should not try the update since you are likely to run into bugs. Interestingly, the new software update is available only for the Pixel 4, not for the Pixel 4 XL.
There is no information on whether this update will be ever made available to stable users and when. It is also not clear if the new software update brings any new features to the Pixel 4. Only time will tell.
Meanwhile, Google is reportedly working on the February Android Security update that it is planning to roll out on February 6. While the upcoming software update will enhance the security, it will not likely bring support for the 5G services of Indian carriers. Google last year said it would roll out the 5G software by the end of 2022, but later it said the rollout is delayed. The company recently said the software that enables 5G support would arrive by the first quarter of 2023.
