Nebraska City is Halfway Towards Signature Goal to Ban Abortions, Kick Out Late-Term Abortion Biz
Pro-life residents of Bellevue, Nebraska continue their efforts this month to collect signatures for a proposed Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinance that would shut down the only abortion facility in the city.
WOWT News 6 reports Judith Mansisidor is one of three local residents who helped organize the petition to pass the life-saving abortion ban. She estimated that they have nearly half of the 7,400 signatures that they need to prompt action on the ordinance.
“It’s going well. I’d say we’re about a third to halfway done, and we have three months left,” Mansisidor told the news outlet. “What I’m most encouraged about is people coming together that haven’t worked together before in the community and in solidarity that there is to make Bellevue a sanctuary city for the unborn to protect all life.”
Bellevue has an abortion facility, CARE, run by an elderly late-term abortionist. Leroy Carhart is under investigation by Nebraska health officials after a patient accused him of nearly killing her in a botched abortion in February, according to Operation Rescue.
Carhart would be forced to close his abortion business if the ordinance passes. For that to happen, pro-lifers first need to collect enough valid signatures from Bellevue voters. Then, the city council will be required to vote on the ordinance. If the council rejects it, the proposal will go on the ballot for city residents to approve.
Although Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinances differ in each city, each recognizes that unborn babies are valuable human beings who deserve to be protected under the law. The ordinance prohibits abortions within city limits, with exceptions for risks to the mother’s life, and prevents abortion businesses from opening there. It also penalizes abortion practitioners for aborting unborn babies, but it does not penalize women who seek or have abortions.
To date, 61 cities have passed ordinances protecting unborn babies, according to the Sanctuary City for the Unborn website.

However, the effort in Bellevue is being met with violent threats. Last week, two notes threatening to “shoot” pro-lifers with “AR14 rifles” if the ordinance passes were found at a church and a Catholic ministry, signed by the radical pro-abortion group Jane’s Revenge. Police are investigating.
“It’s really a shame that there was a threat against this. This is an American process, a civil process, a peaceful process. This is what makes our country so great, and it’s a shame that it was threatened,” Mansisidor told WOWT.
She reminded the news outlet that the reason why they are working so hard to pass the ordinance is because unborn babies are being killed in their community.
“The person that’s most threatened by pro-abortion is the child in the womb,” Mansisidor said.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, more than a dozen states now protect unborn babies from abortion and about 10 more are fighting in court to do the same.
However, abortions are still legal in Nebraska. Although Republicans control the state legislature, they fell just a few votes short of the veto-proof majority that they needed to pass pro-life legislation this year.
A growing grassroots movement is working to protect unborn babies at the local level. More than 60 cities in Texas, Ohio, Nebraska and New Mexico have passed ordinances that protect unborn babies from abortion within city limits.
Other cities and counties have passed pro-life resolutions, which are statements of support but not enforceable law, that recognize unborn babies’ right to life. In Arkansas, 19 counties and 10 cities and towns have passed pro-life resolutions, according to Family Council of Arkansas. Several North Carolina counties passed pro-life resolutions recently, too, and the New Mexico county commissioners of Otero approved a resolution in July condemning the pro-abortion laws in their state.
