‘I would hit him’ – Cristian Romero on potentially facing Harry Kane at World Cup
Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has told FootballersLives.tv that he would make life difficult for his club teammate Harry Kane should Argentina face England in the World Cup final this year (via Daily Mail).
Romero joined Spurs last summer from Serie A side Atalanta and has quickly established himself as one of the most competent centre-halves in the Premier League.

He also has a fiery, combative spirit and a penchant for a tough tackle on the pitch, which is bad news for any attacker who comes up against Romero.
The 24-year-old is currently on international duty with Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar looking to add to his growing reputation and his 16 caps (Transfermarkt).
The South American side face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals tonight, and should they win, Argentina will face either Brazil or Croatia in the semi-finals. Win there, and there’s every chance Romero could come face-to-face with his Spurs teammate Harry Kane in the final.
England will need to get past France first, and then could face either Morocco or Portugal in the semi-finals before hopefully moving on to the big final.
In a recent interview, Romero joked about the prospect of facing Kane at international level and made it pretty clear that club loyalties would not interfere should that happen.
He said: “I would be very sorry for him if I came up against him. I would hit him with a lot. When I play for my team I want to kill, in a good way, the rival opponent. I have said to Harry ‘for sure I’ll tear it up.’ Unfortunately, he plays for his team. I play for mine.
“Both [Kane] and Dier, I have told them, ‘if I face you, I am sorry for you, but if we must hit each other, it’s going to be like that’. When he is serving for England and I am serving for Argentina. I don’t have any teammates, no friends, nothing.”
It sounds like friendships would be on hold for 90 minutes, with Romero adding: “He is for his team and I am for mine. So, unfortunately, I would not be friends in that match. My objective and the other ten who are on the field are the same to kill the rival opponent, in a good way, to die for our shirt.”

See, Romero says all this and we think he’s joking, but you can guarantee that should Argentina get to the World Cup final, he will be at his most aggressive and passionate, and no Tottenham player is going to stand in the way of him winning the game. It would be a fascinating battle to see Kane and Romero go head-to-head like that.
