Retributive Justice in Afghanistan; Capital Punishment in Western Afghanistan Sparks Reactions
Responses from all around the world denouncing the public execution and appealing for the abolition of the death penalty followed the public execution of a man as retribution in the western Afghan province of Farah.
For the first time since assuming power, the current Afghan government executed a man on Wednesday in the province of Farah as part of the retribution justice system (Qisas).
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) expressed its opposition to the death sentence in response to the man’s public execution and urged the Afghan authorities to do away with the death penalty.
“The UN strongly opposes the death penalty in all circumstances and calls on de facto authorities to establish an immediate moratorium with a view to abolishing the death penalty,” UNAMA said in a tweet.
France also denounced the man’s public execution in Afghanistan and referred to it as one of many human rights breaches committed by the country’s present government.
France condemned “in the strongest terms the public execution carried out today by the Taliban in Afghanistan,” in a statement by the French Foreign Ministry.
“This odious decision is in addition to the many other violations of fundamental rights and freedoms committed by the Taliban against Afghans and Afghans since their takeover by force in August 2021,” the statement reads.
Many Afghan government officials have expressed their satisfaction and happiness and offered their congratulations, even though the execution has prompted international condemnation.
The Director of Government Media and Information Center, Inamullah Samangani, called the execution of the sentence of retribution as an irrevocable principle of Islamic Sharia and congratulated Muslims and supporters of human rights.
The incumbent government’s spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, stated that Taj Mir, a resident of Herat province, had been given the death penalty for the murder of a resident of Farah province.
According to Mujahid, the judge pronounced the punishment after the accused admitted guilt. Mujahid further stated that the verdict of the court sentencing the man to the retributive public execution of the man was approved by the group’s supreme leader, Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, and other religious scholars.
According to Mujahid, many top officials of the current administration, including Abdul Hakeem Haqqani, the acting head of the Supreme Court, Mullah Ghani Baradar, Deputy Prime Minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani, the acting Minister of Interior and other members of the cabinet were among the large crowd when the retribution punishment was given.
This comes as the supreme leader of the group ruling Afghanistan previously prescribed the implementation of Hadd and Qisas punishments at a meeting with the judges.
