The event usually attracts millions of spectators cheering on their countries – but very little about this tournament is the same as previous ones.
This year’s World Cup has been laced with controversy ever since Qatar was named as the host in 2010.
More than 6,500 construction workers have died building stadiums and infrastructure for the tournament, according to a previous investigation by the Guardian. Qatar claims it has only had three work-related deaths.
Although many people will be backing England from Qatar and from home, others have refused to watch.
People have posted on social media about snubbing the games to not be ‘complicit’ and to ‘take a stand’.
