Former Hibernian striker Tam McManus has said that he expects Tottenham to strengthen their backline with two or three additions during the January transfer window.
There have been mixed reports so far regarding the areas of the pitch that Spurs will be prioritising additions in January.
The Evening Standard reported last month that the North London club will let Bryan Gil, Japhet Tanganga and Pape Matar Sarr leave on loan and that Antonio Conte has asked for direct readymade replacements to be brought in for all three players.
Meanwhile, 90 min claimed last week that the Lilywhites are prioritising signing a new right wing-back and an attacker in January.
In addition, Hugo Lloris’ future at Spurs has also been cast into doubt, with Tottenham said to have identified candidates to take over from the French international (TEAMtalk).
McManus acknowledged that Tottenham need to upgrade on their number one but suggested that it is not likely to happen in January. He backed Conte’s men to make additions in the centre-back and wing-back positions when the window reopens.
The pundit told Football Insider: “It’s incredible, this knack of going behind every time they play a game of football. It is something they have to work on because they are coming out so sloppy and letting the opposition take the initiative.
“Luckily for them, Leeds aren’t the best defensively. Tottenham have to be stronger. You look at the goalkeeper, I don’t think he is as strong as Tottenham could have.
“But he’s the captain there and I don’t see them getting rid of him. You look at the defence and the mistakes they are making, there have to be additions there in January.
“You need players who aren’t going to make regular mistakes. I’m talking two or three solid players to make sure that defence is solid and they can start with the wing backs.”

I am certain that Spurs will sign another winger/forward to replace Gil – presumably someone who can play on the right as a cover for Kulusevski.
A right-sided centre-back and an attack-minded midfielder are also likely to be at the top of Conte’s wishlist. I suspect the club will put off their search for a new right wing-back until next summer.
