[Women's Wrestling] Vang Earns KCAC Wrestler of the Week Honors
A successful trip to Arizona has garnered Karina Vang (FR/Fresno, Calif.) of the Doane Women's Wrestling team this week's Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Women's Wrestler of the Week. This is Vang's first time receiving the award and it is the second for the Tigers this season.
Vang, ranked No. 15 at 101, wrestled this past weekend at the Embry-Riddle Mile High Open in the 109 division. She opened the tournament by taking on the 16th-ranked wrestler in the NAIA for the 109 division, Aphrodite Ayala of Simpson (Calif.). Vang jumped out to a 6-0 lead before recording a pin at the 1:46 mark.
In the semifinals, Vang recorded a 10-0 tech fall win over Jennifer Alcott of Ottawa (Ariz.). In the finals, she took on Hermelinda Mendoza of Ottawa (Ariz.). Vang fell behind early and trailed 10-2 before picking up a takedown which turned into a pin at the 2:18 mark.
Vang improved to 4-2 on the season, winning her first college tournament. The Tigers will be in action again on Friday and Saturday as they compete at the Missouri Valley Open in Marshall, Missouri.
