‘If there is a 1% possibility’ – Son opens up on his World Cup return to action
Son Heung-min has revealed that the support he got from the fans made him determined to do everything possible to feature in the World Cup for South Korea.
Son is undoubtedly South Korea’s best player and one of the country’s most iconic superstars, and the nation’s hopes of doing well in Qatar, rests, to a large extent, on the Spurs player’s shoulders.

The country would have held their collective breath when the 30-year-old fractured his eye socket at the start of the month, however,the forward’s surgery has proven successful (The Telegraph) and he has been included in their 26-man squad for the tournament.
Son was in attendance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday to cheer on his teammates against Leeds United, and he appeared to be in very good spirits (Twitter).
South Korea get their campaign underway with a clash against Rodrigo Bentancur’s Uruguay on November 24 and the forward insisted that every single player in the squad is focused on doing something special in Qatar.
The Tottenham man told Naver: “The most important question was whether or not I would be able to go to the World Cup. All the players in the national team will be boarding the flight with a lot of responsibility on our shoulders.
“I’m not sure if the other players still have matches they need to play, but now mentally and physically we need to be fully focused on Qatar. I am now fully focused on that. It’s a unique feeling.”
Son thanked the fans for their messages of support, admitting that it motivated him to play a part in the World Cup.
He added: “The fans would have been feeling disappointed and concerned even more than myself. I was happy to be able to post a hopeful message for the fans during a difficult situation making a difficult decision.
“I felt as the fans had given me so much support and were concerned, so even if there is a 1% possibility I can do my bit on the pitch. I will be only looking towards that. I will do my best not to let down our fans who have given us full support.
“Sometimes there may be times we do not perform even if we prepare well, but during those times the most important factor will be the support of the Red Devils (Koran supporters).”

South Korea are in an extremely difficult group with Portugal, Ghana and Uruguay. So, it will be difficult for them to progress to the knockout stages. However, given the individual quality they have, they are certainly capable of producing an upset or two, just as they did in Russia in 2018.
