Sports briefs: Members have strong showing at Rolling Hills tournament
Membership apparently has its privileges. The Oktoberfest Doubles Tournament at Rolling Hills Club in Novato featured two finals in which all four players hail from the host club.
On Sunday, Craig Steiger and Ryan Smith won the 4.5 men’s doubles crown with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over fellow club members Scott Williams and Cory Fulchiron.
The 3.5 mixed doubles final was also an all-Rolling Hills affair as Alaina Thompson and Jonathan Thompson posted a 6-3, 7-6 (8) win over Stacy Clemenceau and Mark Grimshaw. Jonathan Thompson also won in 3.5 men’s doubles with Patrick Rimbaud.
In the men’s Open doubles, Shibu Lal and Daniel McGuire defeated Seth Norman and Matt Halligan 6-3, 6-3. Lal also won in Open mixed doubles, teaming with Gayatri Ramesh for a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mylene Martin and Tate Gilpin.
The other double winner was Jason Holmes, whose firm Holmes Burrell Real Estate was a tournament sponsor. Holmes teamed with Christopher Brawer to beat Edward Su and James Brandt in 4.0 men’s doubles 6-4, 6-4.
In the 4.0 mixed doubles finals, Holmes and his wife, Jennifer Holmes, defeated top-seeded Brian Willis and Marina Willis 6-4, 7-5. The Holmes also won at the Hal Wagner Memorial Doubles Tournament last month.
Other winners were Patrick Wong and Drew Morrell (3.0 men); Sarah Blevins and Jenna Bullis (3.0 women); Lacey Bresnahan and Suzanne Kawahara (3.5 women); Kira Deguchi and Alicia Deguchi (4.0 women); Patrick Wong and Julies Lennon (3.0 mixed); Tom Kincaid and Kathryn Samples (4.5 mixed).
The three-day tournament drew players from throughout the Bay Area and raised more than $2,500 for Zero Breast Cancer. Players were treated to mini facials and massages, and Rolling Hills even provided child care for players while they were competing. There was a taco bar for players on Saturday night and a gelato bar on Sunday.
“There was such great energy,” said tournament director Erin Henke. “There was great viewing on every court. All the feedback has been very positive.”
