I’m a fashion stylist – the autumn trends that instantly make you look outdated & why chunky knits are a big faux pas
FASHION trends come and go as quick as the seasons.
And with autumn well and truly underway – leather trousers, chunky boots and stylish hats are flooding the high-streets once again.
But according to one fashion guru, it’s important to choose wisely when replenishing your wardrobe for “cosy season.”
Speaking exclusively to Fabulous, celebrity fashion stylist Fiona Davis says: “Whilst I love autumnal dressing as it’s all about gorgeous coats, chunky boots and luxurious layering, many of my clients find the change from their summer to autumn wardrobes tricky.
“They feel having to wear thicker heavier fabrics can be unflattering, and all too often make simple style mistakes that leave them feeling frumpy rather than fabulous.”
Here, she reveals her simple styling tips to help you nail autumnal essentials with ease and confidence – and avoid any fashion faux pas along the way.

Avoid autumnal colour palettes
Fiona warns against wearing traditional Autumnal hues head-to-toe.
“As beautiful as the burnt orange and moss greens are, wearing traditional autumn hues head to toe can look a little dated,” she says.

“Instead keep your palette neutral with elegant creams, camel and navy tones.”
Ditch the chunky knit
If there’s one garment that screams autumn, it’s the super chunky knit.

However, Fiona warns: “Whilst a super chunky knit may represent autumn, it’s not usually the most flattering or practical piece.”
Instead, she advises opting for luxurious layering.
“Layering is a fabulous way to keep the autumn chill off and also an easy way to add different texture, colour and prints to your looks,” she explains.
“Start your layering with a silky cami, followed by a cotton or denim shirt and finish with a fine knit jumper or cardigan.
“This will keep you cosy, but you can easily remove a layer should you need to.”
Say yes to no VPL underwear
Fiona points out that leather leggings are a great alternative to jeans and are a versatile piece for your autumn wardrobe.
“They look super chic styled with a fine knit jumper and chunky boots for day, or heels and a blazer for night,” she says.
“There are some great faux leather options available at all price points, so you don’t have to break the bank or wear real leather.
However, Fiona notes: “Always ensure you’re wearing the right underwear with your leather leggings. Opt for no VPL pants to guarantee you keep your look chic and stylish.
Choose the right hat for your height
The personal stylist to the stars goes on to share how hats are the ultimate autumn accessory and can really elevate your style.
“If you’re petite go for a small brim style such as a trilby,” she advises.
“Taller ladies opt for a wider brim fedora style. There’s definitely a place for chic cosy hats in your autumn wardrobe as well, they are a great way to add a pop of colour to your look.”
Invest in chunkier footwear
Fiona notes that Autumn is a time to ditch the popular white summer trainers and lighter shoes such as ballet pumps to embrace some chunkier footwear.
“This is not only for practical reasons but it’s also about adding balance to your over all look,” she explains.
“When wearing autumn fabrics and layers you need a chunkier shoe to ensure you don’t end up looking top heavy.”
Outerwear
“Don’t just throw on any old coat over a fabulous autumn outfit,” Fiona points out. “Your coat is the first piece of clothing people will see, so give it some thought.”
She goes on to say that a good coat is definitely worth investing in.
“If you buy a classic timeless style such as a wool, trench or quilted in a neutral tone you’ll be bringing it out year after year,” the fashion stylist explains.
How to look chic not cheap this Autumn…
According to Fiona, Ugg boots are officially back in style for Autumn 2022.
But she warns that it’s key that you “avoid tired, over slouchy Uggs.”
She adds: “Unmaintained clothing is also going to make you look cheap rather than chic.
“Out-of-shape bobbly knitwear is a no no and loose buttons on coats and jackets should be repaired.
“I would also really encourage you to avoid extremely baggy clothing this autumn.

“A little oversized when done properly can look fabulous but trying to hide yourself under shapeless pieces ends up being more unflattering.”
Fiona advises: “Try belting or a little half tuck to give you a more flattering and elegant silhouette.”
