Sports briefs: Marin Catholic rolls past Antioch to stay unbeaten
The Marin Catholic football team remained undefeated five weeks into the season after a dominating performance against Antioch on Friday night in their final non-league tune-up.
Charles Williams was the opening and the closing act as he scored a pair of touchdowns during a big rushing night to help the Wildcats (5-0) beat Antioch, 34-11.
Williams scored early on a punt return as Marin Catholic took a 6-0 lead. Joey Cook found Kelly Storms for a touchdown pass with three minutes left in the first quarter to give the Wildcats a 13-0 lead.
Antioch was driving toward the end zone in the second quarter, but a sack by Sean Peck stalled the drive. Antioch settled for a field goal and went into halftime trailing 13-3.
Cook spread the ball around in the second half, connecting with Greer Arthur for a 25-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. McKay Hawthorne pushed the ball across from 3 yards out after Williams’ 77-yard run to give the Wildcats a 27-3 edge late in the third quarter.
Antioch (1-4) finally celebrated in the end zone early in the fourth quarter, and a two-point conversion cut Marin Catholic’s lead to 27-11.
Marin Catholic has next week off before opening the MCAL slate at Tam on Oct. 8.
- Tomales picked up its first victory of the season with a 28-16 home win against Roseland University Prep Friday night.
Girls volleyball
Wesley Slavin piled up 96 assists to help Tam go 4-0 to claim the title at the El Cerrito tournament Saturday. Natalia Clifford had 32 kills and 14 digs across the four games. Zoe Lyko had 19 kills and Sachi Houser added 16 kills, four blocks and played strong defense for the Red-tailed Hawks (21-3, 3-1 MCAL). Allie Bertolina had a team-high 25 digs.
Tam was coming off a 25-13, 25-15, 25-14 win against Terra Linda on Friday night. Slavin had 27 assists in that match. Clifford (14 kills, nine digs) and Katherine Moriarty (13 digs, nine kills) both flirted with double-doubles.
- Led by Kate Lane’s 24 kills, Marin Academy compiled a 4-1 record while competing at the Sonoma Valley tournament on Saturday. MA got 13 kills apiece across the five games from Sarah brown, Tess Etem and Kayla Saxon. Bailey Barmaki added 25 assists and 10 digs. Two of MA’s victories came against San Rafael.
- Lauren Dignan had 16 digs to help Branson to a 25-20, 25-15, 25-17 win against Archie Williams Friday. Sadie Snipes had 13 kills for Branson (8-6, 2-1). Elena Fisher (12 kills, 10 digs) and Logan Tusher (22 assists, 11 digs, nine kills) both had double-doubles for the Bulls. Elsa Snipes had 20 kills to pace the Peregrine Falcons (12-3, 2-2). Phoebe Galland had 15 digs, Reese Fraser had 26 assists and Lauren Barnwell added seven kills and nine digs.
- Marin Catholic (14-6, 3-0) posted a 25-12, 25-3, 25-19 victory against San Marin Friday night.
- Redwood (10-4, 3-0) also stayed unbeaten in league following a 25-10, 25-11, 25-11 win over San Rafael. Elsa Kehoe had eight kills and nine digs for the Bulldogs. Olivia Dugan added 15 digs and Tenley Brovelli had 17 assists.
Boys water polo
Terra Linda bounced back from an opening loss to post three consecutive wins, finishing fifth in the gold division of the Napa Tournament. Leo Manwaring-Mueller had five goals and two assists in TL’s second win on Saturday. Soren Jessen had four goals in that game after scoring seven times in a Friday win against Lodi.
- Charlie Bussi scored eight goals across a pair of wins for San Rafael as the Bulldogs went 2-2 at the Napa Tournament this weekend. Bussi and Gabe Cabrales scored three goals apiece in a 13-9 win against Concord. Bussi had five goals and Finn Seery scored seven times in Saturday’s 22-7 win against Rodriguez.
Girls tennis
Kate Block, Payton Greco and Charlotte Funkalsrud picked up singles victories to lead Marin Catholic to a 5-2 win against Novato Friday. Kayla Henderson picked up a victory for the Hornets at No. 4 singles.
- Mirabel Arlander and Audrey Gilmor won the top two singles matches, leading Branson to a 7-0 win against Terra Linda Friday.
Men’s golf
Dominican finished 11th at the SMU Bishop Men’s Invitational, its second tournament of the week, on Saturday at The Home Course in Dupont, Wash.
Elliot Nielsen led the way for the Penguins with back-to-back rounds of 3-over 75s, including six birdies on the weekend. Derek Hamilton had a strong second round of 2-over 74 to move up four spots into a tie for 37th, one stroke behind Nielsen at 6 over par.
Cross country
Jared Wright led the way for Dominican at the Cougar Challenge in San Marcos as he finished 16th in the field of 206 runners at the Champions Course. Wright crossed the line in 24 minutes, 52.3 seconds.
