Journalist reveals why Tottenham did not make a bid for James Maddison
Journalist Dean Jones has revealed Tottenham held an interest in James Maddison during the summer but suggested that the North London club did not receive any encouragement from Leicester to bid for the midfielder.
Spurs were reported to be on the lookout for a creative playmaker in the final weeks of the transfer window (Evening Standard) and Maddison was mooted as one of the names on the North London club’s radar.
Alasdair Gold said on his YouTube channel last month that the 25-year-old is a player that some at Tottenham admire.
However, Antonio Conte’s men failed to secure an attacking midfielder before the transfer deadline while Maddison ended up staying put at the King Power Stadium.
Brendan Rodgers’ men have had a disastrous start to the season and are currently rooted at the bottom of the Premier League table.
Maddison has two years left on his contract with the Foxes (Transfermarkt) and Jones believes he will have a decision to make regarding his future at the end of the current season.
When asked about the Leicester star’s future, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “He’s a great player and he will have a decision to make over his future at the end of this season, I think.
“Tottenham do like him but they were not given any encouragement that he would be available for anyone to buy, so it was felt they had enough to get by for now.”

There is no doubt about Maddison’s talent but I do not see him as being a natural fit for Conte’s system. Even if the Italian decides to deploy a 3-5-2 rather than a 3-4-3, the Leicester star does not have the legs required to play in Conte’s three-man midfield as even the two number eights are required to do a lot of defensive work.
