The councils that are REMOVING electric car chargers have been revealed – is your area on the list?
IT has been revealed that some local authorities have fewer electric car chargers than they did a year ago.
As we head towards the 2030 deadline for all new cars needing to be electric in Britain, the demand for EVs is growing.
The research, carried out by leasing experts LeaseLoco, found that Six in 10 (61%) local authorities are failing to roll out public electric car chargers fast enough to meet government’s targets.
The government wants 300,000 public EV chargers by 2030 – but Department of Transport figures show there are currently only 32,011 across the UK, of which just 5,974 are rapid chargers.
With another 268,000 public chargers to be installed and less than eight years to get it done, local authorities need to grow their charger network at an annual rate of 32%.
But Lease Loco says: ‘the majority are woefully short of this growth rate.’

It says that 228 of 375 local authorities missed the target over the past 12 months.
In fact, more than a quarter (26%) of them expanded their public charger network by less than 10% over the past 12 months.

Of those councils, 22 actually saw the number of public EV chargers it has shrink
Canterbury saw the biggest drop; it had 65 EV charging devices available to the public a year ago, but only 45 today. A 26% drop.

Department for Transport figures also reveals that the electric car charger rollout across the UK stalled for the second quarter running.
In total, 1,721 public chargers were installed from 1st April to 1st July 2022, down 10% on the previous quarter.
That’s 30% off the number of chargers installed in the last quarter of 2021.
