McGregor who hasn’t fought since his lost his UFC 264 trilogy fight to Dustin Poirier after suffering a horror leg injury is still yet to set a return date for his Octagon comeback.
Speaking exclusively to SunSport, the former UFC light-heavyweight and heavyweight champion weighed-in on what he thinks the future holds for the 34-year-old.
The Louisiana native says the Crumlin fighter will beat at lot of fighters at 155lbs, and welterweight but doesn’t believe he’ll be able to recapture Championship level form.
Cormier didn’t question the Irishman’s skill, but he questioned if ‘The Notorious’ really has the drive to do it all over again after the millions he has earned inside, and outside of the Octagon.
Cormier said : “Is Conor McGregor done fighting – no, he’ll fight, he’ll fight – and there’s a lot of guys that Conor McGregor can beat at 155 and 170lbs.
“But I don’t know that he can recapture that surprising – yo, remember what he did to Eddie Alvarez, remember what he did to Jose Aldo.
“I don’t know if he can recapture that, I don’t think it’s because of lack of skill, it’s because he doesn’t need to.
“I think when Conor McGregor was on this assent, he needed to change his life, and his families life – everything was a need, right.
The 2022 UFC Hall of Famer believes the former lightweight kingpin isn’t as excited as he was back on day one, but credited McGregor for his financial worth.
DC thinks the initial drive was for McGregor to make his family life more financially secure.
He added: “I remember when he got fifty grand from Dana White, when he got a bonus – If Conor McGregor got a fifty grand bonus now he wouldn’t even blink at it – but the excitement when he got that first bonus [In Stockholm] told me that he needed this.
“He doesn’t need this anymore [money] – and I think that might be what his drive was to be what he became – that he needed to change his family – and he has done that, successfully.“
