Declan Shafi (2222) is competing in the A-Open in the Sparkassen Chess Trophy event 2022. There are a number of events going on including a “No Castling” tournament! The event is an online tournament organised in Germany. It is a European nine rounds Swiss, with a round a day.
UPDATE – Sunday 24th July 22 – 09:45 hrs
Result
Round 7
Declan Shafi (2222) ½ – ½ (1834) Jona Bungarten
Drawing his round 7 match put Declan on 4 pts out of 7. Giving the depth of this tournament, that is a good return!
Round 8
Benedikt Forch (2016) 0 – 1 (2222) Declan Shafi
Then in round 8 Declan with black got another win! This put him on 5 points, equal 23rd before tie-break, and 49th with tie-break. In a tournament of this strength that to me is fantastic! Not only that, I don’t think Declan has played many top level chess tournaments over the past few years due to the pandemic and his university studies. A few TAFCA games, 4NCL, but nothing like this and it’s good to see he has not lost any of his enthusiasm for chess or his outstanding abilities over the past few years.
I am convinced if he had concentrated on this more, he would be a lot higher grading wise! Declan was an outstanding junior at Castlehill Chess Club and I had the privilege of watching him grow not only as a chess player, but as a young boy growing into a magnificent young man.
Now it seems history is repeating it’s self as I watch Master Rishi Vijayakumar J10 at Castlehill carry on where Declan left off! (Gee that makes me feel old?).Oh what a lucky chess club we are at Castlehill, Dundee!
For Declan`s reward he face’s the number 7 seeded player, GM Daniel Hausrath (2478) from Germany with white in the last round (9)! Now that’s a nice way to finish off a tournament!
COME ON DECLAN!
