Top Teams In The West Go Head To Head

Milwaukee 10, Sioux City 4 – Box Score

The Milwaukee Milkmen (31-29) started off their series against the Sioux City Explorers (24-35) with a bang on Friday night at Franklin Field.

The Milkmen came out swinging right off the bat, quite literally. CF Correlle Prime (2-for-5, 1R, 2 RBIs) was the first to score for the Milkmen in the bottom of the first inning when 1B Keon Barnum (1-for-4, 1 RBI) hit a sacrifice fly that allowed him to make it home. The Milkmen scored big in the bottom of the 4th after DH Bryan Torres (4-for-5, 2R, 3 RBIs) hit a single to right field that allowed 2B Miguel Gomez (0-for-5, 2R) and 3B Logan Trowbridge (2-for-3, 2R) to score, followed by Prime hitting a single to center field that brought home Torres and SS Jeremiah Burks (3-for-4, 1R, 2 RBIs). The Explorers got on the board in the top of the 8th when CF Trey Martin (1-for-4, 1R, 2 RBIs) and RF Danry Vasquez (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) hit back-to-back home runs to score a total of 3 runs in the inning. Martin hit a 2-run homer that also brought home 3B Blake Tiberi (2-for-5, 1R) while Vasquez hit a solo home run. The Explorers scored an additional run in the 9th inning when 1B Gabe Snyder (2-for-4, 1R, 1 RBI) was first to bat and hit a solo home run off of the 6th pitch, but it wasn’t enough to reach the 10 runs scored by the Milkmen in the first 8 innings.

The Milkmen and the Explorers will play the second game of their series on Saturday, July 23rd at 6:00p.m. at Franklin Field where the Explorers will try to tie up the series.

Lincoln 3, Lake Country 2 – Box Score

The Lincoln Saltdogs (29-32) and the Lake Country DockHounds (21-39) had a close matchup on Friday night at Wisconsin Brewing Company Park, but the Saltdogs came out victorious.

The first runs of the game were scored in the top of the second inning when LF Patrick Caulfield (1-for-4, 1 RBI) hit a double that allowed DH Welington Dotel (2-for-4, 1R) to score. C Bobby Barnard (1-for-3, 1 RBI) put out for out number 2 that allowed RF Garett Delano (1-for-4, 1R) to make it home to score the second run of the inning. Both teams were able to put some runs on the board in the 6th inning starting with 3B Ryan Long (2-for-4, 1R) scoring for the Saltdogs after a putout from Dotel. The DockHounds scored their first run of the game when DH Tristen Carranza (0-for-3, 1R) made it home thanks to a sacrifice fly to the right fielder hit by 3B T.J. Bennett (1-for-3, 1 RBI). In the bottom of the 7th, CF Daikan Yoh (1-for-4, 1R, 1 RBI) hit a solo home run to score the second run of the night for the DockHounds.

The DockHounds fell short against the Saltdogs and will look to tie up the series on Saturday, July 23rd at 6:05 p.m. at Wisconsin Brewing Company Park.

Railroaders 6, Dogs 7 – Boxscore

The Cleburne Railroaders (25-35) knotted the game up late on an error by the Chicago Dogs’ (40-20) third baseman Harrison Smith but failed to capture the win as Chicago prevailed in a 7-6 nailbiter in game one of the three-game set from Impact Field on Friday, July 22.

The Railroaders struck early in the first inning once again, putting up two in the run column in the frame. The first came when Kacy Clemens lined a single into center field to score Chuck Taylor. With the hit, Clemens extended his hitting streak to 20 games, a league-high thus far in 2022. Zach Nehrir would come around to score after Dogs’ starter Kyle Murphy walked Hector Sanchez with the bases loaded to bring to score to 2-0.

Chicago struck for two in the bottom of the inning off Trevor Simms when K.C. Hobson launched his 200th career home run over the right field fence to knot the game back up.

The run-scoring continued in the second with both teams putting up runs in the inning. Cleburne put up two in their half off a Taylor sacrifice fly that brought Nick Shumpert home and then a Chase Simpson sacrifice fly scored Edwin Arroyo to bring the score to 4-2.

Grant Kay led off the bottom half of the second with a solo shot to cut Cleburne’s lead in half and then Michael Crouse hit a liner into the corner for a triple that scored Charlie Tilson and Smith. After two, it was 5-4 Dogs.

Run production took a halt until the bottom of the fifth when the Dogs hit yet another home run, this one a solo shot by former big leaguer Stevie Wilkerson to extend the lead to 6-4.

Down to their final few outs heading into the top of the eighth, the ‘Roaders were able to scratch and claw their way back into it. Taylor hit a grounder through the hole and into left field to score Shumpert to cut the lead to one. Then with two outs and Taylor on first, Nehrir hit a routine grounder to Smith who short-hopped the throw to Hobson at first who was then unable to make the pick. Taylor was able to score on the play and Nehrir found his way all the way to third but was stranded there to end the inning.

Nick Gardewine came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth against the heart of the Chicago lineup. After striking out the first two batters he faced, Kay launched his second home run of the night and the fourth of the evening for the Dogs to give Chicago the lead for good. Brian Schlitter had himself a shut down ninth to clinch the opening game of the series for the Dogs at a final score of 7-6.

Gardewine was slated with the loss after surrendering the go-ahead blast in the eighth. Schlitter got the win after putting up 1.1 innings of scoreless work.

Goldeyes 5, Railcats 2 – Boxscore

The Winnipeg Goldeyes (33-27) beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 5-2 at US Steel Yard on Friday night.

The Gary Southshore RailCats (24-37) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Jesus Marriaga led off with a home run to right-centre field.

The Goldeyes quickly tied the game in the top of the third.  Reggie Pruitt Jr. singled to right-centre leading off and stole second base.  After Justin Thompson walked, Pruitt advanced to third on Hidekel Gonzalez’s flyout to centre.  Eric Rivera lined a single down the left field line to plate Pruitt with the tying run.

Max Murphy and David Washington opened the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles.  Logan Hill lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Murphy with the go-ahead run.  Two batters later, Thompson ripped a two-out, two-run home run to left-centre that made it 4-1 Goldeyes.

Gary SouthShore pulled within 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Michael Woodworth reached second on a leadoff error and scored on an RBI single to left from Jonathan Engelmann.

Winnipeg re-extended the lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth.  Rivera singled to right-centre leading off, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a two-out wild pitch from RailCats’ starter Adam Heidenfelder.

Goldeyes’ starting pitcher Luis Ramirez (7-3) picked up the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits over seven innings.  Ramirez walked none, struck out seven, and retired 12 of the final 14 batters to face him.

Heidenfelder (2-6) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in six and two-thirds innings.  Heidenfelder walked three and struck out three.

Travis Seabrooke and Bryan Blanton combined for a scoreless bottom of the eighth in relief of Ramirez.  Tasker Strobel pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 16th save of the season.

Raul Navarro singled in the top of the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

Monarchs 6, RedHawks 4 – Boxscore

Despite getting two home runs from left fielder Rymer Liriano the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (40-20) were not able to overcome a five-run deficit and lost 6-4 to the Kansas City Monarchs (39-21) on Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field. Monarchs’ catcher Alexis Olmeda hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth to cap off a four-run inning.

The scoring started right away, as Kansas City left fielder Kevin Santa opened the game with an RBI single in the top of the first inning. Shortstop Pete Kozma made it a two-run game with an RBI single of his own the next inning. The RedHawks got a run back in the bottom of the inning after shortstop Sam Dexter hit a solo home run, his fifth of the season.

In the sixth inning Kansas City scored four runs, including three on the Olmeda home run. Left-hander Peyton Wigginton (4-2) gave up five of the six total runs on five hits and five walks in 5.1 innings pitched and earned the loss. Reliever Tanner Riley pitched 0.2 innings and gave up a run on two hits. Luke Lind and Joe Jones combined to pitch the final three innings and didn’t allow a run.

Fargo-Moorhead made the game close late as they scored a run each in the sixth, seventh, and eighth inning. Kansas City’s Lewis Thorpe (6-1) earned the win after allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings pitched. The former major leaguer struck out seven batters in the win. Relievers Jordan Martinson and Jeremy Rhoades each gave up one run in an inning pitched. Jameson McGrane came into the game in the ninth inning and gave up a walk but struck out two and earned his tenth save of the season.

Right fielder John Silviano and bench coach Anthony Renz were both ejected in the loss and first baseman Manuel Boscan left the game with an injury after the third inning.

Cougars 4, Canaries 3 (10 Innings) – Boxscore

The Kane County Cougars (31-30) defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries (23-35) on a beautiful night in South Dakota in a close game with a tight come back push from the Canaries.

The Canaries scored on a Gavin LaValley solo home run in the second inning.

This was promptly followed by back-to-back solo home runs from the Cougars’s Cornelius Randolph and American Association WAR Leader Jimmy Kerrigan. Ernie De La Trinidad advanced to 1st on a fielders choice which scored Sherman Johnson.

Zane Gurwitz led off the 5th inning for the Canaries with a double and was hit home on a single from Kona Quigle. With the Canaries down by one in the bottom of the 9th, LaValley came up to bat and hit a solo home run to send the game into extra innings.

With two outs in the top of the 10th, Jimmy K came back up to the plate and did what Jimmy K does. Kerrigan hit a double and scored De La Trinidad to seal up the game.
