Marin Briefs: Woodhead, Team USA advance on world stage
Sir Francis Drake (now Archie Williams High School) and Stanford graduate Dylan Woodhead scored in regulation before Team USA defeated Hungary, 16-15, in a shootout at the FINA Water Polo World Championship in Budapest on Friday.
The victory comes after a quarterfinal loss to Greece. The U.S. is scheduled to play Serbia for fifth place on Sunday.
Baseball
The Novato Knicks swept the Fairfield Indians in Saturday’s doubleheader. The Knicks, playing with a split squad, took the matinee game, 3-2, as Anthony Pomilia went 2-for-3 and drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning. The Knicks went on to shut out the Indians, 13-0, in the late game.
• Jonathan Waite homered twice and drove in five runs to lead the San Rafael Pacifics’ onslaught in Friday’s 14-2 victory over the Martinez Sturgeon at Albert Park.
Waite cleared the fences in the second and sixth innings. Daniel Aldrich, who drove in four runs, homered for his only hit of the day. Jayson Summers homered as he went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Tyson Thompson was 3-for-4 and Tyler Georgeson was 2-for-5.
Summers picked up the win as he held Martinez to four hits and one run during seven innings, while he struck out 11 batters and walked one.
The Pacifics, who hosted the Santa Rosa Scuba Divers on Saturday, are scheduled to play the Sturgeon again Sunday, this time in Martinez.
