Iwata and Horikawa make weight for triple crown clash
Tomorrow fight fans will be able to see the latest triple crown champion being crowned as Shokichi Iwata (8-0, 6) [岩田 翔吉] faces Kenichi Horikawa (41-16-1, 14) [堀川 謙一] to unify the Japanese, OPBF and WBO Asia Pacific Light Flyweight titles.
Today, ahead of their clash, the two men took part in their weigh in and both men made the 108lbs without any issues at all.
On the scales Horikawa, the current OPBF champion, came in well under the limit at 107.25lbs. He spoke about how he'd been out of the ring for two years, but despite that the 42 year old looked in really good shape. He did look like a man who's been out of the ring since the end of 2019, and he also didn't look like a man in his 40's. Though he did look somewhat grumpy and miserable, like a man who didn't really enjoy his weight cut, despite making weight with room to spare.
As for Iwata, who enters the bout as the Japanese national champion, he was 107.8lbs, and he looked in great shape, whilst explaining he had lost more weight than usual, but also had to stay hydrated due to the hot weather. He explained the focus of this bout was proving he was the best in Asia. Interestingly he seemed to downplay the potential of a world title fight next, saying he was only thinking about winning this bout.
