Boston United V Chester FC - Match Thread #40 - Vanarama National Leag
On the back of two straight defeats we are once again on the road tomorrow as we make the venture to Lincolnshire to play Boston United away in what will be our third consecutive away game. Considering Boston have a new manager, a strong home record, and are positioned inside the play-offs it will be a really tough game tomorrow, especially given we have lost our last two games which were both away from home. This clash will also be the first of three fixtures over the next seven days in which we compete against play-off opposition, because Brackley Town who we play on Tuesday and Southport who we host next Saturday are both sides who also sit in the top seven.
Our last match was on Saturday as we lost 4-3 away against Curzon Ashton where we managed to throw the game away late on. The first half wasn’t good enough from us because after a bright start, we were too negative as we conceded twice. About halfway through the half Curzon Ashton made it 1-0 through Alex Curran, who tucked away after capitalising on a poor Okera Simmonds ball. Alex Curran and Curzon Ashton scored again to make it 2-0, as he found the corner from range. It was a very disappointing half as we went into half time with a mountain to climb. We looked to have climbed that mountain in the second period as we came back to draw level. Two minutes into the half Okera Simmonds pulled a goal back for us to make it 2-1 by stabbing in from close range. However, Curzon Ashton scored again at the other end to make it 3-1, as former Seal Tom Peers tapped in. Eight minutes later George Waring powered home a fantastic header for us to make it 3-2. We then managed to equalise courtesy of Kevin Roberts, who scored a brilliant header to make it 3-3. Just as we thought we salvaged a point, we threw it away in injury time as a terrible Louis Gray clearance ricocheted off Tom Peers who made it 4-3 to Curzon Ashton. A sickening way to end a very eventful encounter, as we were consigned to another away defeat.
Boston United have had a very up and down season, although the Lincolnshire outfit do sit inside the play-offs so there are more positives than negatives for Boston. The Pilgrims have won 10 and lost nine (which is just one less than us), so they certainly are an unpredictable side which is emphasised through the fact that like ourselves, they have had two different management teams this campaign. After a five year stint, long-serving gaffer Craig Elliott was relieved of his duties earlier on this month following a 2-3 home defeat to Alfreton Town. It didn’t take Boston long to appoint a new manager however, as Paul Cox was announced as their new manager last week with tomorrow’s match being his second game in charge. We could also face one former Seal at the Jakemans Community Stadium tomorrow afternoon, who is Danny Elliott. Striker Danny joined us in July 2019 after impressing on trial, and in general I thought he performed quite well for us and was certainly underrated by some supporters. He signed for Alfreton Town on loan in January 2020 where he remarkably scored five goals in five appearances, before he returned to us in February 2020. Due to our campaign being curtailed early, Danny departed us on a permanent basis in April 2020 to sign for Hartlepool United. Finally, last July Elliott signed for Boston United from Hartlepool United which is where he has been at ever since.
Looking forward to my first ever visit to the Jakemans Community Stadium because it looks like a nice ground on the whole, although it is still nothing on York Street which is a cracking old ground. Surprisingly it is still in use as a Sunday League side called Railway Athletic play there which is a very quirky and interesting story. I am not feeling that confident about our chances, however even though we have lost two in a row we did play well in both of those games, so as long as we tighten up at the back and convert our chances in the final third, then we could get a point. Come On City!
