Report: Ajax to make decision on Spurs star after match at Chelsea
The Athletic have revealed that Ajax were initially led to believe that Tottenham Hotspur wanted around £20.8m for Steven Bergwijn.
De Telegraaf reported last week that Ajax were set to return with a second offer for Bergwijn after seeing their opening £15m offer turned down by the north London club.
However, the Dutchman’s situation seems to have changed after his heroics at the King Power Stadium on Wednesday after his quickfire brace deep into stoppage time saw Antonio Conte’s side pull off a dramatic comeback to secure a 3-2 victory.
The Daily Express claimed on Thursday that Spurs had a change of heart following Bergwijn’s memorable cameo against Leicester and have decided to take him out of the shop window.
The Athletic have now backed that up, explaining that even Tottenham’s initial valuation of £20.8m of Bergwijn felt like it was out of Ajax’s reach, and that the winger’s price is only likely to have gone up following his performance on Wednesday.
The report suggests that Bergwijn’s rumoured move to the Johann Cruyff Arena is not yet completely off, with the Eredivisie giants now waiting until Tottenham’s clash against Chelsea on Sunday before deciding whether or not to make another offer.
However, it is stated that Spurs would ‘prefer not to sell’ the 24-year-old and that the Lilywhites are only entertaining the possibility of cashing in on him since he is one of the club’s few sellable assets.
In addition, it is revealed that Bergwijn wants regular game time and he hopes that his most recent performance would earn him a regular spot in Antonio Conte’s starting eleven.
If that does not materialise, it is said that the former PSV Eindhoven man would be open to joining Ajax.

Conte has spoken in glowing terms of Bergwijn’s attributes and insisted that he considers the Dutchman to be an important part of his plans (BT Sport).
In contrast, the Italian has been much less complimentary when speaking about the likes of Ndombele or Dele. That is why I am convinced that he would want to hold on to the Dutchman at least until the summer.
