On Sunday, December 19, 2021, Senator Manchin announced he will not support Biden’s “Build Back Better” plan, with his decision likely killing the $1.75trillion climate bill.
In order for the bill to pass, the Democrats need Manchin’s vote to even out the 50-50 senate, as well as a vote from Vice President Kamala Harris.
“If I can’t go home and explain it to the people West Virginia, I can’t vote for it,” he said.
“And I cannot vote to continue with this piece of legislation. I just can’t. I’ve tried everything humanly possible. I can’t get there.”
The Build Back Better plan would extend the child tax credit for the year of 2022, helping families with childcare needs in the wake of the pandemic.

Senator Manchin voted against reforming filibuster stipulations when it comes to voting rights.
During the Senate’s conference, Manchin described changing present regulations to a majority ruled Senate would fuel the “dysfunction that is tearing this nation apart.”
