Venice
Monty starts off his journey by exploring Venice on one of the city’s famous barges.
He finds both large and small green spaces that are all often hidden from view and surrounded by high walls.
He also visits all the gardens along the Grand Canal.
Monty is able to meet those that have transformed a previous rubbish dump behind one of the city’s most famous churches into a beautiful garden.
Croatia
Monty is able to visit a public garden close to the Italian border with Croatia which was first created by a royal plantsman from over 150 years ago.
He then heads down the Adriatic coast through Croatia where he picks up on the trail that the Venetians followed.
He ends his time in Croatia on the beautiful island of Lopud, which is near Dubrovnik.
Along his fascinating journey he discovers wildflowers and natural lakes.
He is also given a tour of ancient olive groves, and discovers a nursery where over 200 varieties of the national flowers of Croatia can be found – which is the Iris flower.
Greece
Finally Monty finishes his journey in Greece by starting in Corfu.
The Greek island offers strong Venetian links which include olive trees planted by them that are still growing to this day.
Monty visits a garden made by an Englishman who happens to have Greek connections to the widow of English writer Gerald Durrell.
Next, he finds himself in Greece’s capital, Athens, where the study of botany first bagan.
He also visits the Royal Gardens and visits a reforestation project which is taking place on Mount Hymettus, with two modern gardens in and around the city.
Lastly, he prepares to do some work as he helps to create a garden on another Greek island.
