The best new TV and film to stream this week – from Wrath of Man to Encounter

STUCK for things to watch on Netflix this December? Well, look no further. The Sun has got you covered with the best new TV shows and films coming to your screens.

From Jason Statham in Wrath Of Man, to Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds in Red Notice, there’s no shortage of content to binge-watch until your heart’s content.

Wrath Of Man (Prime Video)

Incredibly, it’s been over 23 years since Statham and director Guy Ritchie teamed up for the iconic Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels.

Hot on the heels of the success of that film, the pair stuck together for two more – Snatch and then Revolver, before going their separate ways.

But now, 15 years later, the band is back together for Wrath Of Man, a full-on and ferocious revenge movie that’s as action-packed and visually explosive as those three classics, only even more intense.

Jason plays H, a highly-skilled and ruthless crime boss who goes undercover at a security firm, hoping to find a way to avenge the murder of his son.

And, when he gets drawn into a risky but lucrative heist, it looks as if he’s found a way to do it.

Be warned, with almost constant violence and a stratospheric body count, it’s not for the faint-hearted.

The Osbournes Want To Believe (Discovery+)

You’d expect Prince of Darkness Ozzy Osbourne to be an open-minded kind of guy.

This, after all, is the man who once bit the head off a bat live on stage, and who’s ingested more pharmaceuticals than you’ll find in the average branch of Boots.

But, believe it or not, Ozzy and his wife Sharon are sceptics when it comes to the paranormal and all things spooky.

In the second series of The Osbournes Want To Believe, Ozzy and Sharon’s son Jack tries once again to turn his doubting mum and dad into believers, sharing evidence of some of the oddest, seemingly supernatural activity ever caught on camera.

Canada’s Drag Race Anniversary Extravaganza (BBC3)

The second season of the Canadian version of RuPaul’s Drag Race is just days away.

Featuring appearances from all of the queens including winner Priyanka, who’ll be giving viewers a taste of his debut single, as well as an introduction to next season’s judges.

It’s a sensational celebration of the past – and a glimpse of a glorious future.

FC Bayern Munich: Behind The Legend (Prime Video)

German football giants Bayern Munich are the latest club to allow cameras behind the scenes, with a documentary that captures the highs and lows of last season.

Beginning with their 2020 Champions League final win in Lisbon and following the side all the way through to their 2021 Bundesliga triumph.

It also captures Bayern at the very height of their powers, thanks to a star-studded group of players that includes Polish goal machine Robert Lewandowski.

Along the way, we also get to meet many other folk who make the club tick, from the president to the groundsman, and hear about Bayern’s long and glorious history.

Encounter (Prime Video)

Films and TV shows about unpleasant visitors from outer space are all the rage right now.

With that said, Encounter is a tense new movie about former US Marine Malik, who sets off to rescue his two young sons after learning about a terrifying hostile invasion by extraterrestrials that’s being covered up by the government.

Also starring Octavia Spencer, it’s compelling stuff. Although if you’re hoping for spectacular but terrifying 10-foot-tall aliens, you might be disappointed.

The little green men in this movie are very little indeed – in fact, they’re nasty space insects who burrow into human bodies and gobble us up from the inside.

Play-Doh Squished (IMDb TV)

The concept is simple: three teams of two children and two adults will compete against each other over a series of colourful and entertaining creative and physical challenges, all of which involve – yes, you’ve guessed it – Play-Doh.

Set in a festive winter wonderland, the show is hosted and judged by Modern Family star Sarah Hyland, and is sure to be a hit with any household where Play-Doh reigns supreme.

Money Heist (Netflix)

It was an agonising three-month wait for the final five episodes of the brilliant Spanish thriller to drop – but when they did, they turned out to be every bit as dramatic, explosive and emotional as fans were hoping.

Still trapped inside the Bank of Spain and with a much-loved character now presumed dead, things aren’t looking good for The Professor and his crew.

With time running out, can they find a way to smuggle out all the gold without being noticed – and without losing anymore of the team?

A fitting and nail-biting end to a show that’s captured imaginations worldwide.

Red Notice (Netflix)

Who can resist a blockbuster starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot?

Comical, continent-hopping heist movie Red Notice tells the story of FBI agent John Hartley, who teams up with international art thief Nolan Booth in order to thwart criminal mastermind Sarah Black.

Truth be told, it’s unlikely to win any awards – although anyone who’s able to keep up with the constant double-crossing between the characters deserves a prize.

Close To Me (All4)

Every week brings with it another new psychological thriller. But few are as compelling as this six-part series about a woman, Jo who falls down the stairs, only to wake up in hospital unable to remember the events of the last year.

Over the course of the series – all of which is available on All4 – Jo battles to emerge from her cloud of claustrophobia and confusion in order to work out why her life appears to have changed so much in 12 months.

The Wheel Of Time (Prime Video)

Turning fantasy writer Robert Jordan’s epic series of books into a TV series was always going to be a demanding challenge – they are, after all, vast, densely detailed and crammed with magical characters with unpronounceable names like al’Lan Mandragoran and Egwene al’Vere.

But anyone still mourning the loss of Game Of Thrones will be blown away by Amazon’s spectacular, mega-budget adaptation, which stars Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, an ass-kicking witch on the hunt for a person she believes to be the reincarnation of a super-powerful figure called the Dragon.  

Mystic (BBC iPlayer)

The first series of this supernatural family drama about horse-loving young Londoner Issie, who emigrates to New Zealand with her mum Amanda.

Now it’s back, and the second series continues to tackle topics such as sexuality, mental health, friendship and climate change.

With the local town, Kauri Point, suddenly inundated by tourists, the environment is once again under threat.

Meanwhile, Issie and her friends must find a way to save their beloved stables from financial ruin, all the while navigating the hormone-laced waters of growing up.
