How to keep your beauty look strong from dusk till dawn – and blotting paper is essential
WHETHER a minimalist or a maximalist, our beauty panellists reveal how to keep your look strong from dusk till dawn.
The minimalist Ruby Hammer
Go-to look: Radiant skin and strong brows
FOR a dewy base, I love Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, £43. Pat it in using a Beautyblender, £17, adding concealer only where you need the extra coverage.
Blush is underrated, but it makes a big difference – apply to the apples of your cheeks and work upwards towards the outer corners of your eyes for a natural flush.
Top with highlighter on the cheekbones, brow bone and a hint on the Cupid’s bow – avoiding the tip of the nose, as you will naturally catch the light there.
To frame your face, brush up brows with a spoolie to spot any gaps, then fill them in using a slanted brush and Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo, £24 (1). Work from the centre outwards and do the inner side last to avoid an overly heavy finish.
For a night out, I like to subtly accentuate my eyes with Hourglass 1.5mm Mechanical Gel Liner, £17 (2), then finish off with Lancôme Lash Idole Mascara, £23.50 (3). Finally,
I use just a hint of colour on my lips and have spent the last year trialling my brand-new Ruby Hammer Lip Serum Balms, £18 each (4).
They are a pencil format, so easy to pop in my bag and top up throughout the evening.
Touch-up essentials
RATHER than adding more powder and mattifying my face, I blot away excess moisture to reduce shine, so I’m not left looking cakey.
Try Fenty Beauty Invisimatte Blotting Paper, £13 (5). Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, £24.50 (6), is perfect if you’re struggling with problem areas.
Gently buff a small amount of the concealer on to the blemish or redness to avoid rubbing off the rest of your make-up.
Trinny London T-Kit, £28, are super-handbag-friendly and slot together to stay clean in your clutch. For a night out, I keep the spoolie, tapered and square brush heads in my bag.
LONG-WEAR GOLDEN RULES
- Don’t reapply matte lipstick – it will look crusty. Take it off and start afresh.
- Pick the right primer to suit your skin type.
- Apply foundation with a brush or sponge for lasting coverage.

Go-to look: Glitter, smoky eyes and red lips
FOR me, the best (and easiest) way to get a perfect smoky eye is to use Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in Molten Midnight, £24 (7).
Apply it straight over the eye, then blend into the socket to smoke it out. It’s black with gold glitter in it, so does both jobs in one, and there’s no mess from the glitter fall-out – what more could you want?
For a killer red lip, you can’t go wrong with Mac Lipstick in Ruby Woo, £17.50 (8). First line lips with Rimmel London Exaggerate Full Colour Lip Liner Definer in Red Diva, £4.99, to help keep the shape precise, and you’re good to go.
I like a matte finish, so I use a mattifying foundation and set it with Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, £33.50 (9), followed by Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, £26, to prolong the look.
To help your make-up last, use a good primer – for the face, I created my Lisa Armstrong All About The Base Priming Moisturiser, £16, and I love Mac Longwear Paint Pot in Painterly, £17.50, as an eyeshadow base.
If you have oily lids or struggle to keep mascara on, use a waterproof eyeliner and mascara to stop the smudge.
Touch-up essentials
POWDER in its own compact, such as Bare Minerals Original Mineral Veil Pressed Powder in Sheer, £26, is perfect for when you get hot and bothered – just pat it on to take down the shine.
For lips, Charlotte Tilbury Lip Lustre, £19 (10), will top up the colour and keep them looking plump all party long.
Always have a mini lash glue on you that you get free with a pack of false eyelashes, just in case one starts to peel off. Nobody wants a flappy lash!
A blendable eye pencil, like No7 Stay Perfect Shade & Define, £8 (11), can be used to top up your eyeshadow if it wears off – because who has space for a full eyeshadow palette in their clutch?
LONG-WEAR GOLDEN RULES
- Avoid anything oily on your skin or eyes before applying make-up, because it will slide straight off.
- Don’t wear a lipgloss if you’re going for dinner, as you’ll only wipe it off – stick to a stain and top up with gloss when you get to the restaurant.
- Use a light touch, as if you over-apply make-up, it will just wipe off, especially if wearing a mask or hugging people.
- Don’t forget to set your look – it’s the one step that does the most to keep it all in place.
