Staff at Harrods tell secret shopper animals killed for fur ‘don’t suffer’

Luxury designers at stores in Harrods have been accused of ‘creatively cloaking the cruelty of the fur trade’ with claims that animals ‘do not suffer’.

Undercover footage appears to show staff representing global brands Yves Salomon, Moncler and Max Mara making ‘misleading’ claims about the fur trade.

Yves Salomon strongly rejects accusations made by Humane Society International (HSI), which deployed secret shoppers to the department store in London in October.

A representative for the brand appears to claim foxes on fur farms are not kept in cages in the animal rights organisation’s footage.

The member of staff goes on to say that they have ‘their own private space’ in ‘separate rooms’ – like in Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

But the HSI argued that the the comparison with the well-known rescue home for pets was a ‘whole new level of delusion’.

The secret shopper is also assured the animals ‘have enough space to play and everything’, and that they are put down with an injection before their fur is taken.

When the activist questioned the Yves Salomon rep about distressing videos she had seen of animals suffering in the fur trade, she was told it is ‘only propaganda’.

The shocking footage comes only days after Metro.co.uk reported on foxes with deformed feet, missing ears and diseased eyes discovered trapped in tiny cages in a fur farm in Finland.

As the video continues, a sales assistant believed to be working at Moncler – an Italian luxury fashion brand mostly known for its skiwear – claims the Finnish fox it uses is just a by-product.

‘We take our fur from animals who were already taken for other purposes, like for example meat or something else,’ they add.

Activists also claim sales staff at Max Mara told their secret shopper that its fur is certified by the SAGA Furs assurance scheme, meaning their products are marketed as ethical.

HSI/UK executive director Claire Bass said: ‘It’s hardly a surprise that staff in Harrods don’t want to describe the grim reality of life for animals on fur farms, because it would surely leave their customers horrified.

‘The week before speaking to five Harrods’ sales assistants who all creatively cloaked the cruelty of the fur trade, I visited several supposedly “high welfare” Finnish fur farms.

‘I come face to face with the abject misery and suffering of thousands of foxes locked up in barren metre-squared battery cages their whole lives.

‘Before Christmas they will all have been killed by anal electrocution, and the luxury lies of fur trade PR spin will market their lifeless fur to consumers.

‘The claim that fur farms are “like Battersea”, a rescue home for pets, was a whole new level of delusion.

‘Fur farms and Battersea are like night and day in animal welfare terms. A Harrods manager’s claims that their fur is “ethically and sustainably sourced” bears no scrutiny whatsoever.

‘There is nothing ethical about any fur farming, certified or otherwise. We urge Harrods to stop peddling lies and stop selling fur cruelty.’

Ms Bass also added that the sooner the UK Government bans the import and sale of animal fur, the sooner ‘we can stop bankrolling this brutal industry’.

England and Wales were the first countries to ban the practice on ethical grounds in 2000, followed by Scotland two years later.

But material is still imported from countries like Finland, Poland and China to be used by top fashion brands.

Following the release of the distressing footage, a Yves Salomon spokesperson claimed some activists try to ‘trap and destabilise’ employees using ‘unacceptable’ methods.

They added: ‘First, the house Yves Salomon wants to ensure all its employees of its total support against this intimidation campaign which uses staged and misleading contents.

‘Like all responsible, transparent, and high-quality luxury houses in Europe, in particular France and in Italy, the brand Yves Salomon only supplies its fur products from certified and controlled sources mainly in Europe and North America.

‘All farms are assessed by state services, independent authorities and third part experts.

‘All fur and leather products used in the house Yves Salomon follow the rules and the standards of the luxury sector and farming activities, highly monitored.

‘The staged films published by animalist organizations do not reflect the reality of these activities.’

Metro.co.uk repeatedly contacted Harrods, Max Mara and Moncler for comment.
