[Women's Basketball] Turnovers Hurt Hawks Against #17 Northwestern
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Not shying away from a challenge, the San Diego Christian College Hawks continued their tough non-conference schedule on Friday afternoon, hosting the #17 Northwestern College Red Raiders at the Kroc Center. SDCC started strong and finished strong, but ultimately succumbed to a very potent NWC offense by a score of 51-82.
The first quarter saw the Hawks match the Raiders' pace and aggressiveness. SDCC hung right with NWC and after Mamaeia Makoni nailed a three-pointer in the waning seconds of the period, the differential would only be 5 points in the visitor's favor.
Turnovers and points off of those turnovers would be the story of the game, however. The Hawks would hand over the ball 28 times and allow Northwestern to capitalize often. In fact, the margin of victory for NWC was almost completely attributed to the 28 points that they gained off of the SDCC miscues.
The Hawks would find themselves playing from behind during most of the game, but continued to show sparks of progress and esprit de corps. Digging deep within themselves, San Diego Christian would close strong, outscoring the Raiders 21-16 in the fourth and final quarter,
In preparation for a competitive conference season. head coach, Shawn Chaffin continued to try and expand the depth of his bench by getting his young players some experience against top competition just as he did earlier in the week against Georgia Southern. "Lots of credit to Northwestern. They showed tonight why they are ranked as high as they are nationally," Chaffin commented. "While we had two strong quarters, we need to be able to put a full 40 minutes together."
Maddison Zugna finished the game with a team-leading 10 points. The Hawks blocked 6 shots in the contest, (Zugna 2, Allison Killion 2, Isabel Feller 1, Keren Hogue 1).
