J.D. Vance, 36, officially launched his political career when he entered Ohio’s Republican Senate primary on July 1, 2021.
“We need a new politics for a new generation,” Vance said at a kickoff party for his campaign in his hometown of Middletown. “The old way of doing things ain’t working.”
In a state that voted for former President Donald Trump twice, Vance is running in the same political party as him, despite criticizing his policies, particularly on race and immigration.
In 2016, Vance said Trump was “terrible for the country,” and many expect his comments to come back and hurt him going into the Senate race.
In an interview with Charlie Rose in 2016, Vance said, “I’m a Never Trump guy. I never liked him.”
Who is J.D. Vance?
Middletown, Ohio native, Vance is an American author and venture capitalist.
He is best known for publishing his book Hillbilly Elegy: A memoir of a family and culture in crisis.

The book is a memoir about the Appalachian values of his Kentucky native family and their relation to the social problems in Middletown.
Hillbilly Elegy was turned into a Netflix movie that was released in 2020.
After high school, Vance enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served in Iraq before graduating from Ohio State University and Yale Law School.
He currently works as an investor at a venture capital firm and has contributed to the New York Times and National Review.
What did J.D. Vance say about actor Alec Baldwin?
In a Twitter post on October 22, Vance called on former president Donald Trump to comment on the Alec Baldwin shooting.
Vance tagged Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and said, “Dear @jack let Trump back on. We need Alec Baldwin tweets.”
Many are calling the tweet blatantly disrespectful as the shooting resulted in the death of 42-year-old Halyna Hutchins.
The potential democratic nominee for the Ohio senate election, Tim Ryan responded to the tweet and said, “Someone died, you a**hole.”
Hutchins was accidentally killed on the set of Rust when the assistant director handed Baldwin a prop gun that was loaded.
The assistant director yelled “cold gun” before handing it to Baldwin, signaling the prop did not have ammunition.
Vance’s tweet about the shooting received over 18,000 responses, with most criticizing his response.
“A woman died in a tragic accident. Show some decency and respect,” one Twitter user said.
Others called Vance out for his religious affiliation, saying he is “Christian in name only.”
“A woman died. A man was injured. A whole hell of a lot of people were traumatized. But sure, make Alec Baldwin jokes over over something tragic that was not his fault,” another person responded.
Is J.D. Vance married?
Since 2014, Vance has been married to his wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance.
Usha currently works as a litigation associate for Munger, Tolles, & Olson. Her primary focus is on complex civil litigations and appeals.
She also has a Law Degree from Yale Law School where she was the executive development editor of the Yale Law Journal as well as the managing editor of the Yale Journal of Law & Technology.
She is licensed to practice law in California, Ohio, and the District of Columbia.
The couple met while they both attended Law School and got married shortly after graduation.
Together the couple has two children together, son Edwan Blaine, 4, and another son, but no information is available on him.
