UN says extension of START treaty will affect global nuclear arms reduction
If Russia and the United States manage to reach an agreement on extending the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START-3), it will have a positive impact on the world’s nuclear disarmament
This was reported by TASS, referring to a statement of UN Secretary General António Guterres, which he circulated for the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
He noted that processes are now taking place in the world which may lead to a new arms race. Many states are reducing the total number of weapons, but are qualitatively developing their arsenals.
Nevertheless, Guterres believes that there is hope for positive change in this area. And much of it depends on the two major powers – the US and Russia.
“However, there are signs of hope. The decision by Russia and the US to extend the START Treaty and engage in dialogue are encouraging steps, as is the entry into force in January of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons”, – the UN chief wrote.
The START has been in force since 2010, when Moscow and Washington signed it. Since February this year, the parties have been dealing with its extension. The Russian Foreign Ministry has held an exchange of notes with US diplomats to extend the treaty for another five years.
