HEYMAN’S GAME THREE WALK-OFF SINGLE PUTS WILD THINGS ONE WIN AWAY FROM TITLE
The Washington Wild Things used a walk-off single by Grant Heyman in the tenth inning to defeat the Schaumburg Boomers 3-2 and take a 2-1 series lead in the Frontier League Championship Series. The game was a true pitcher’s duel, with neither team allowing a run until the seventh inning. That was when Schaumburg’s Matt Bottcher singled home a run to give the Boomers the 1-0 lead. The next inning, Joe Campagna scored on a wild pitch to tie the game for Washington, but in the ninth, Bottcher scored on an error that allowed Chase Dawson to reach first safely and make it a 2-1 game. The Wild Things fought right back in the bottom of the ninth when Tristan Peterson brought home Trevor Casanova to tie it and send the game to extra innings. One inning later, Heyman singled home the winning run to give the Wild Things the 3-2 win and put them one win away from the Frontier League title. Both starting pitchers had solid outings, with Schaumburg’s Ryan Middendorf lasting seven innings and allowing just one run (unearned) on four hits, and Washington’s Alex Boshers also lasting seven innings and striking out five while allowing just one earned run.
Game four is scheduled for Saturday at 7:05 p.m. ET in Washington. Erik Martinez will pitch for the Boomers and Rob Whalen will make the start for the Wild Things as they look to close out the series and end their season as Frontier League Champions.
